In the Lottery the characters do have self preservation. They all don't want to be picked but overall they don't show much emotion when others are pick or themselves besides Tessie throwing a fit when her family gets picked and starts screaming its not fair when she gets stoned to death.

In the hunger games the characters also have self preservation but, they show a lot more emotion than the characters in the lottery. Most of the People in the districts look scared or nervous about the thing in a whole. But sometimes they throw that away for others like how katniss volunteered to be tribute.
