AA's use of ethos:
"Some Author that I have met with compares a judicious traveller, to a river that increases its stream the farther it flows from its source, or to certain springs which running through rich veins of minerals improve their qualities as they pass along."
"You however readily submitted to my advice, and I hope will never have occasion yourself, nor give me reason to Lament it.."
2.

AA admits wrongdoing to her son and shows why she sent him to the country, which gives reason to her decisions adding credibility. Also, She used a quote from an author to prove her point, and authors of the time were some of the more educated people. AA also gives examples like, " Would Cicero have shone so distinguished an orater, if he had not been roused, kindled, and enflamed by the Tyranny of Catiline, Millo, Verres and Mark Anthony." this does not mean much to me but to John Q. Adams it was significant and proved her argument.

1. AA's use of ethos:
"My dear son"
When she writes this, it reinforces the fact that she is his mother, so that he realizes that it is in his best interest to listen to her.

"I cannot fulfill the whole of my duty towards you..."
This reminds her son that it is a mother's duty to make sure her children make the right decisions, and that is ultimately why she is writing the letter.

2. This would accomplish her overall purpose of persuading John Quincy Adams to live up to his full potential by acting as a reminder that a mother wants only what is best for her son, so he should take her advice into consideration and realize what he is capable of.

"If I had thought your reluctance arose from proper deliberation, or that you was capable of judging what was most for your own benefit, I should not have urged you to have accompanied your Father and Brother..."

Abigail Adams establishes herself as credible mainly through constant reminders that she is John Quincy Adams's mother and therefore only wants the best for him. She starts the letter by saying, "My dear Son," which makes the letter very personal and establishes an affectionate tone. She also says that she hopes that she is not making a mistake in sending him, but is only trying to do the best for him. This makes her seem more humble, especially when she states, "You however readily submitted to my advice," which prevents her from coming off as overbearing and forceful. When she also says, "do Honour to your Country, and render your parents supreemly happy," she shows that as a parent, she would be happiest if he improved himself to be a "good citizen."
