Realtors were actively encouraged not to show nice neighborhoods to african americans and other minorities, in fear of driving down the quality of the neighborhoods. 

The effects of redlining, though 70-80 years ago, are still felt today. Children who grew up in this time were not able to grow up in safe or stable environments, and were not able to have any housing or wealth (in the form of home ownership) of value passed down upon them by their parents. These children, who are only in their 70 or 80s today, were then unable to pass down wealth to *their* children.
