         <description><![CDATA[<div>The  most popular tourist destinations in North Africa, Tunisia offers an incredibly diverse range of experiences. Along the Mediterranean coast, resort towns like Hammamet provide an abundance of sun and sea; while the southern Sahara is populated by dramatic desert landscapes, fascinating Berber villages and abandoned Star Wars sets. Tunisia's status during Roman times is evident in the well-preserved ruins at El Jem and Carthage, while Tunis offers all the cultural and culinary opportunities you'd expect from a major capital.<br>Location<br>Tunisia is located in North Africa on the Mediterranean coast. It is bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya to the southeast.<br>Geography<br>With a total land mass of 155,360 square kilometers, Tunisia is slightly larger than the state of Georgia. It is mountainous in the north and extends into the Sahara Desert in the south.<br>Capital City<br>The capital city of Tunisia is Tunis, located in the far north of the country.<br>Population<br>Tunisia's population stood at just over 11.4 million people in July 2017.<br>Language<br>The official language of Tunisia is Arabic. The further south you go, the climate gets more arid; and in the southern desert, it is hot, dry and sunny all year round. Rainfall is almost non-existent, though winter nights in the desert can get chilly.<br>Key Attractions<br>With its safe, laid-back vibe and incredible heritage, Tunis is a great place to start a Tunisian adventure. Explore the winding streets and souks of the medina, or admiring Roman ruins at nearby Carthage. The French Ville Nouvelle quarter has many excellent restaurants while the Bardo Museum houses some of the country's most famous ancient mosaics.<br>With its white domed houses and blue-painted doors, the clifftop town of Sidi Bou Said is Grecian in its beauty. Visitors come to admire panoramic Mediterranean views and to explore a plethora of art galleries, boutiques and open-air cafés.<br>Tunisia's section of the Grand Erg Oriental is a wonderland of sweeping dunes and hidden oases. There is rare desert wildlife and revel in the splendor of wilderness sunrises and sunsets.<br>A Punic city that became an important center of commerce during Roman times. Tunisia’s accessible <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Mediterranean-Sea">Mediterranean Sea</a>coastline and strategic location have attracted conquerors and visitors throughout the ages, and its ready access to the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Sahara-desert-Africa">Sahara</a> has brought its people into contact with the inhabitants of the African interior.</div><div>According to Greek <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/legend">legend</a>, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Dido">Dido</a>, a princess of Tyre, was the first outsider to settle among the native tribes of what is now Tunisia when she founded the city of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Carthage-ancient-city-Tunisia">Carthage</a> in the 9th century BCE. Although the story is certainly <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/apocryphal">apocryphal</a>, Carthage nonetheless grew into one of the great cities and preeminent powers of antiquity, and its colonies and entrepôts were scattered throughout the western Mediterranean region. Carthage fought a series of wars with its rival, Rome. Rome prevailed in the mid-2nd century BCE, razed Carthage, and ruled the region for the following 500 years.<br><br></div>]]></description>

Lying between Libya and Algeria, Tunisia is a typically Arab country and 99 percent of the people who live there are Muslim. Before the Arab invasion in the 7th century, Tunisia was part of the Carthage Empire, followed by the Roman Empire. French forces colonized Tunisia from the 1880s through 1956, when Tunisia gained its independence.<br><br>Tunisia has a warm, dry climate and many beautiful beaches. Tourists go for the scenery, lively market and good food. The souk, or market, is a noisy place, with winding streets and bright vendor tents. There, you can buy anything from woven rugs to copper pots to fish and vegetables.<br><br>Oil and natural gas were the main exports there until the collapse of world oil prices in the 1980s. Today, the country has many farms that produce citrus fruits, vegetables, grapes, figs and olives.
