Team 3

Elli G, Konstantinos P, Thodoris

Vincenzo Cornaros

“Erotokritos”, proof that sometimes words are more powerful than people. Vicenzos Kornaros wrote this poem over four centuries ago and it is still considered to be one of the greatest Greek poems of all time making kornaros one of the best writers to ever exist. Although he was born in a rich and wealthy family he still preferred to work among the lowest wealth classes. Through this lifestyle he got to learn about both rich and poor classes which lead him to be inspired for the main character of “erotokritos”, a poor boy who was deeply in love with a beautiful princess , although he wasn’t allowed to, by the society standards. Even though this poem is so great we do not know many things about it’s poet, Kornaros , due to the fact that he was born back in 1533. What we do know , is that he , just like his main character managed to find his true love marieta , get married to her and have two beautiful daughters Helen and katerina who grew up and carried on his legacy.

Team 4

Ilektra, Theodora ,Eleni, Emma

Nikos Gatsos was born in 1911 (or 1914) in Asea, Arcadia. At the age of five he was orphaned by a father who, one of the first immigrants to America died on the ship and was thrown into the Atlantic.

The shock of his father's death frightened him so much that his hands trembled for the rest of his life.

He did his high school studies in Tripoli, where he became acquainted with literary books and methods of self-teaching foreign languages. So, when he went to Athens to enroll in the Faculty of Philosophy, he knew, quite well, English and French. He learned Spanish on his own.

He made his first appearance in literature in 1931 with the publication of the poem Loneliness, while in 1943 he published ‘’Amorgos’’, a collection of poems that was considered a landmark in the history of Greek surrealist poetry and influenced contemporary and later poets.

He was politicized in the following: he believed that every person who is close to art, who makes art, should be opposite all authority. "You can't go with any government," he said, "because every government will always do injustice. You have to be on the side of the wronged or the judge, the opposite."

Team 7

Theofilos, Konstantinos, Dionysis

Manos Eleftheriou was born on March 12, 1938 and died on July 22, 2018. He was a great Greek poet, lyricist and prose writer. He grew up in Ermoupolis, Syros. His father was a sailor so he did not see him often, which may have influenced many of his works.

Some of his greatest pieces are ''Hamlet of the moon'', which became a melody by Thanow Mikroutsikos and was interpreted by singer Thiveos. Another big piece of his is the poem ''Black eyes''. One of if not his last poem it is ''The country of the dead'' which became a melody by Miltos Pasxalidis and was sung himself.

The Country of the dead is one of his biggest pieces. It's lyrics are ahead of it's time they are narrating the story of a young student who commited suicide on the 6th of February 2015 because he was a victim of pcycological and physical harm. When he wrote this song he asked Miltos Pasxalidis to write the melody for this poem. Miltos says that when he was asked by Manos Eleftheriou he was so moved that he started crying with the lyrics.

Team 2

Vasileia, Dimitris, Marina

"Good night, Kemal. The world will never change. Good night."

A song which was written by Manos Hadjidakis during his stay in America in the late 60s. Returning to Greece, Manos Hadjidakis decided later on to translate it in Greek and collaborated with the poet and lyricist Nikos Gatsos.

The song is about the story of a young boy in America who had left his homeland under the pretext of some political contradictions.

Gatsos in retrospect, writing the lyrics in Greek, made him an Arab prince to protect the weak.

What makes it particularly fascinating is Gatsos's unique approach to creating the lyrics. He didn't rely only on historical facts but instead crafted the verses by intuitively connecting with the emotional and psychological experiences of the prisoners. Gatsos seems to have immersed himself in the atmosphere of concentration camps through literature and historical testimonies. This creative process allowed him to capture the essence of the suffering and resilience of those who lived through such harrowing circumstances.
