Language Arts classes are the best. For the most part they are so fun and it's a great place to voice your opinions in comfort without being judged in any way. This was my first language arts class this year and it really helped with my overall college improvement. Prior to this class I was quite nervous about the workload of college and questioning if I could even handle it. It proved to me that not only can I handle it, but I can also enjoy it while I'm doing it! It showed me that college classes can be engaging, interesting, and interactive.

This class made me comfortable enough to be vocal with the answers I have in my head and not just keep them in my head so that's fantastic. This class was a great learning college experience. I had to make sure to double check my work for little mistakes considering I've never really done that before. College was intimidating first walking in, and I've learned that for the most part, people are much nicer than they seem. Everybody is always trying to accomplish something, and everybody wants to share their thoughts on a subject, and I think that is what I've learned and that is the beautiful part about college.

Artifact #1: Humor Narrative

I really enjoyed writing this piece even though I might not have gotten the best grade on it. It really made me think about how I developed my humor from a child considering I've never really looked back like that. Bringing back old and deep memories I just had sitting in my brain felt really good to express and just word vomit at the keyboard. Diffidently my favorite assignment this year.

Artifact #2: Joke Analysis Essay

I originally picked Substitute Teacher for my essay because I somehow thought it would be easier. I was wrong. I've known of this "joke" for a long time, so I thought there wasn't much more to learn about it. WRONG. I honestly and truly thought this joke was nothing more than to make people laugh but it wasn't. It was an undercover racist joke. This fact blew my mind when I put the pieces together and made it really hard to type what I wanted to in this essay. This diffidently taught me how to adapt to an assignment that wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. Nonetheless, I of course really enjoyed writing it.

Not just this specific learning curve but these in general caused me a lot of anger at myself. These had me thinking an answer was 100% correct just for me to find out the last answer I would have picked was the correct one. There was a lot of times I was just going to give up on these because they took so long when I couldn't figure out an answer. These taught me to stay persistent and keep pushing through until I'm completely finished.

The structure we were forced to use in this class to build up our essays is something I'm going to take into my further essays because it's so perfect. It allows you to get your thoughts out in a comfortable manor then come back in a couple days and do it again. It ultimately would make my final drafts that much better. It would make it to where I can catch mistakes way earlier too which was such a luxury in the essay world.

I loved discussions like these because it told me that it was perfectly okay and actually encouraged to say your opinion exactly how it is without sugarcoating. I talk about how I thought racist jokes are fair game at the time depending on the time and place, but I didn't feel any remorse when I was typing I was just having fun. Voicing your thoughts are great and quite frankly, the only way to get good feedback.

I want to talk about one of our very first assignments because I think it really set the tone for the semester. This assignment really introduced me to college and showed me that not everybody is out to get me. People want to help and see you succeed. When you (Dr. DeFago) were so patient with this assignment to make sure everybody knew what they were doing it made me comfortable and extremely ready to tackle the further assignments. This made me realize I need to know what I'm doing before I can really know what I'm doing.

This specific worksheet is going to stay in my notebook for a long time until I can completely get MLA Format into a routine. This class helped me understand the actual "why" to MLA and I'm going to take it into my further classes and experiences with more experience with this. This worksheet will ultimately help me out a lot down the road.
