Also, in the story it not only talks about Chris's journey, but why he may have gone on this journey. But, it also talks about the many conflicts that arise for Chris on his way to Alaska and throughout his journey through the Alaskan Frontier. Which by the end of the novel, there is many discussions whether Chris's motive was to never get out of the Alaskan Frontier, that it was a suicide mission. Krakauer uses words like “dreamer” and,"misfits,” to describe Chris and maybe why he had decided to travel to Alaska. When I think of or see family, I think of similar things. Also, it pictures a great image of why he was so emotional on his journey. As throughout the story there are many instances where Chris could get help along his journey, but won't take it. Ultimately, this conflict is why I believe Chris ends up dying as he thought he would handle the Alaskan Frontier and find whatever he looked for. It is wonderfully put with this statement,“McCandless was simply one more dreamy half-cocked greenhorn who went into the country expecting to find answers to all his problems and instead found only mosquitoes and a lonely death”(Krakauer 72). This quote helps show that McCandless's stubbornness and his ability to dream got in the way of him taking help. McCandless's stubbornness helped him survive three months in the Alaskan Frontier. However, it also led to his unfortunate death due to the fact he was unprepared and wouldn't take help from others. As in the book he is described in a very elegant way as it says,“McCandless distrusted the value of things that came easily. He demanded much of himself-more, in the end, than he could deliver”(Krakauer 184). McCandless would rather believe in himself than take help. I thought it was a very insightful book and kept me very entertained throughout.
