‘So we will not be stupid girls,’ Bella said. ‘And we will not be useless girls,’ Jane added. ‘And we will not be powerless girls’, Yetta finished” (P. 223). This quote shows how Bella wants to be smarter and expand her mind which is a common theme throughout the book.

Bella's family had tragically died and her cousin had left which forced Bella to become more independent. The death of Bella's family forced her to step out of her comfort zone and caused her to fight for what she believed in becoming a passionate leader in the strike. The strike brings together the three girls forming a strong bond between Bella, Yetta and Jane. By the end of the book Bella had become a strong leader. 

Yetta is very brave and when she was arrested Jane was struck by her bravery and fearlessness saying “‘She’s that free,’ Jane whispered to herself. ‘That free, even on her way to jail...’” (P.121). 

Yetta, Bella and Jane form an inseparable bond and through many hard times they become sisters. Yetta comes to America young and is forced to grow up quickly. But she rarely complained knowing how bad her life in Russia was. During the Factory Fire Yetta went back into the burning building to try to find her friends and was killed when she hit the ground. Yetta’s bravery, positivity and determination made her an important character in the book Uprising.

When Jane said “The metal was covered with grease and grime and it scared Jane, somehow, to see what filth and ugliness lay beneath the gleaming, polished, exterior of her car” (P. 191). The quote references a beautiful exterior but an ugly interior. This quote uses foreshadowing to Jane's life. When she finds out her father hired strike breakers she sees the ugly interior of her fathers life.

She becomes interested in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory strike and works long hard hours so that she can learn more about the working conditions and fight for justice alongside Bella and Yetta. Despite Janes wealthy upbringing she realizes how much change she can bring to the strike and works hard to fight for better wages and working conditions for the shirtwaist girls.

Jane’s relationship with her father changes dramatically in the book. She goes from being fully reliant on him to fully independent in a very short time. Jane’s transformation is shown in her growing sense of consciousness and she becomes a passionate leader in the strike. Tragically the fire killed Jane as well as many other factory workers but her passion in the strike made an impact on many characters and changed the lives of many young workers.

-A Time For Courage The Suffragette Diary of Kathleen Bowen by Katheryn Lansky

A diary account of thirteen-year-old Kathleen Bowen's a life as an orphan in Washington, D.C. in 1917. This book follows a 13 year old girls perspective national battle for women's suffrage, the war in Europe, and her own school work, family and life.

"And this world

has been so cruel to me
And it's been the same too them
But I don't mind sharin' my sweet depression
With some boys that act just like me
And a girl who does the same
I don't know how I got here
But I'm glad as hell I came"

I believe it shows the hardship and suffering the girls have been through and how it makes their friendship stronger because they each have been through very hard times and they helped each other through them. And this song connects to that theme well.
