The impact of Industrial Revolution on farmers is a big main idea because it was a huge change in the way people lived and worked. Advancements in farming equipment made farmers work easier and allowed them to harvest more crops. But farmers began to over produce and it caused prices to decline and it hurts profits. A lot of farmers moved from their rural areas to get better paying jobs in urban areas which provided better quality of life.

Railroads were a huge deal in the Industrial Revolution because it allowed farmers to ship goods quicker and reach new markets to sell crops. It encouraged Americans to settle Westward and would stimulate our economy/economic boom! Some downsides of the railroad were that the companies grossly overcharged farmers and many went into debt because of it. The railroads were built by the Chinese and the Irish and was completed in 1869.

The most interesting thing that I leaned about was how America was a good fit for the industrialization. It got me excited to learn more about America this year. One thing was that we had spirit of invention and had creativity and ingenuity. We also had the abundance of natural resources like, oil, coal, iron ore, and timber. There was growing population and labor force (immigration) and the government had lazzez faire ("hands off") approach of business.

George Pullman

George Pullman was a key figure in the industrial revolution because he was an american businessman and inventor. He made an impact in the railroad industry and made the first company town. He had an interest for passenger travel in the railroad industry and made sleeper cars to make the experience more pleasurable. Before, the railroad cars were uncomfortable and dirty and they were very unsatisfactory. George Pullman had good intentions with the company town but the negatives outweighed the positives and in 1894, close to 12,000 Pullman employees went on strike.

Edwin Drake

Edwin Drake was a key figure in the industrial revolution because he was the first to successfully drill for oil. He used the steam engine drill, which was a new thing in the industrial revolution. The number one use for oil in the mid/late 1800's was kerosene. This was because they needed it for lamps because they didn't have light bulbs quite yet. The bi-product of the oil refining process was gasoline and they discarded it in rivers and lakes. As a result to this, rivers like the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland would catch fire.

Cities and Urban Living

The industrial revolution impacts my life today because of its development of the cites and urban living. If the steel industry didn't happen, we wouldn't have sky scrapers and big city jobs. Not everyone is made for the farm life. I still live in a less urban area and I have to drive twenty minutes to get to stores and such, but it is better than living in rural areas in the west before the industrial revolution because you had to provide your own food, Kids wouldn't have as great of schools or even schools at all. Job opportunities would be limited as well.
