in "the magic fish," a story about a kid who is a child of vietnamese immigrants and gay, how can we find ourselves in this story? how can we find ourselves in stories similar to this? and what do these stories provide us with? in the "beauty and the chad," a beauty and the beast retelling where gender may not be so binary and homosexuality is addressed and accepted with open arms, how can this translate to our real world understanding of intersectionality and acceptance? how can fairy tales promote our understanding of other identities, and realizing that people are not just made up of one defining trait?

why is this important??

there are not many stories that can showcase multifaceted identities. although they exist, there are a lot of stories that just represent one experience. for example, a story about a white gay kid is not that relatable to a person who's lgbt and a person of color. a story about being a person of color may have multiple different experiences when they're also trans or gay. i think the magic fish covers a good scope of these different experiences, and in "beauty and the chad" it's more of the experiences of exploring genderqueerness (depends on how you view the story) and gayness. not only that, but the magic fish seems to provide queer fairy tales within the story itself (i.e the ending to the little mermaid by helen). this is important for children to see and provide people with representation

- the magic fish has multiple stories in one, which all lead to tien's multifaceted identity as a gay, poc, child of immigrants
- beauty and the chad can help someone who isn't typically seen as allowed to be "gay" (if that makes sense, i.e frat bro) and see that is a multifaceted identity

- the magic fish retelling of the little mermaid
- the magic fish color changes and showing of different stories
- the different stories overlapping and talking about these experiences and identities through generations, provides a story for someone who is not limited to just one identity
- the changing of the stories in the magic fish
- beauty and the chad relating to a more modern day approach and being through two different time periods and perceptions, can help others be more understanding and see someone working through internalized homophobia
- both characters ending with being understanding of sexuality (even if unaware of it?)
- having a character work through their sexuality despite stereotypes and preconceptions about things like "frat bros"
- perhaps also include the tale of the rose ? don't know yet
