The diamond shaped glass were prefabricated into panels reducing installation time. The curtain wall was doubled glazed glass, with each diamond panel incorporating its own waterproofing system. This system also had a double seal with a flexible sponge to accomodate movement within the facade due to live and dead loads.

Disadvantages: The curtain wall had extremely high manufacturing cost as each glass panel had to be uniquely cut with precision to the exact measurement. This was due to the buildings engineering lean and curve demand, that with even 1mm tolerance, the buildings facade would not have succeeded. The design required extreme engineering technicality.

Rick Howley

The Diamond Building showcases a modern slant to the design of historic churches in the area referencing the stone tracery of their form. The unique pattern of the diagrid bracing system allows differing window sizes which gives the flexibility to optimize solar requirements for each side of the building. This reduces HVAC loads whilst maximizing the visual connections between the laboratories and the atriums inside the building. At 81 million pounds build cost a unique building such as this is more expensive and complex to construct than a more simplistic design.

The intricate facade system boasts a series of glass re-inforced panels which open and close, allowing both air and light to enter the rooms. A thermally efficient envelope insulates the design, while the roof terrace collects rainwater for reuse and irrigation.

Disadvantage: Perhaps the only disadvantage encountered with this building is the construction costs. The building was designed to represents the nearby reefs with its coral shaped structure. With the curves and oval shapes patios, winding internal ramp and off form structure, the cost of formwork and concrete would have been significant. This is accentuated by the intricate external facade panels. With each panel consisting of hundreds of see through ovals, to fabricate these would have taken significant amounts of time.

The glazing encapsulates almost the entirety of the building, thus allowing for accessible natural day-lighting to the majority of interior space. In addition, the double glazed units help to maintain a stable internal environment through reducing rapid heat gains/losses. Despite the overall curved shape of the building, each panel of glazing is flat; thus, reducing construction cost in comparison to curved glass. The facade system is the main architectural feature of the building, whilst complimenting both the structural & mechanical disciplines.

Disadvantages:
Although the facade comprises of flat glazing panels, the bespoke deigns & shapes required would drastically increase the overall construction cost of the building.

Katrina Lu

The Gherkin's facade is known as the double skin facade, which as its name suggest consists of both a outer and inner layer.

Advantages:
The use of the double layer system allows natural are to enter in between the skin as the outer layer moves allowing natural ventilation. In addition to this the outer layer of skin can also act as solar protection from the sun sustaining a comfortable temperature within the building. With the facade doing this the energy consumption of the building has reduced by 50%

Disadvantage
The main disadvantage would be the initial cost of construction as this facade would require more material and more expertise in the construction process due to its complexity.

Jonathan Lotfi
The University communication and design building has a unique facade system that transforms to regulate daylight

The clear advantages of this system are for huge energy saving costs as it regulates the interior temperature of the building substantially from it's adaptive system. The structure is also aesthetically pleasing.

the main disadvantage is the complexity of the design had affected the maintenance of each panel causing large costs to keep it functional. Each panel consisting of multiple triangular shapes that open and close depending on the light creates much needed mechanical maintenance throughout the buildings life.

Emma Tucker

This building has engaged an innovative new building façade known as a 'smart screen'. The smart screen is essentially an ivy hedge that has been grown in Dutch greenhouses. It is produced in 1.2 by 1.8 meter sections that has been planted in gardens.

Advantages:
- Normally takes years for an ivy wall to grow. This system makes them available instantly.
- The economical benefits can be utilised instantly as the space can be used for events and functions as soon as the facade is installed instead of waiting for the garden to grow.
- Steel framework creates five rows of channels that are filled with earth, allowing the green wall to grow.
- Computer-controlled system of pipes for irrigation.
- Green wall looks visually continuous, creating the illusion it is supporting the structure.
- Natural light and airflow creates a unique space.

Disadvantages:
- As it is a completely natural facade the look, light and airflow is completely dependant on the growth and maintenance of the ivy. If the ivy begins to die or can not be maintained, the space will completely change in temperature and aesthetics.
- Costly and constant to maintain as irrigation system must be tended to.

Fiona Trinh
The Mittermeier hair salon located in Linz Austria features a facade which is meant to emulate a " three-dimensional architectural hair wave". The primary function of the exterior was to attract attention.
Advantages:
Aesthetically pleasing to customers as the hair wave looks different from any point of view in the street
The facade acts as both sign and as a curtain over the window as privacy
Disadvantages:
Difficult to clean because the facade us made of numerous compact panels arranged vertically
Minimal natural sunlight can get through so it would rely on artificial lighting and heat thus reducing the overall efficiency of the building
Not suitable for hot climates because the lack of air ventilation and due to the material used it would retain heat from sunlight
