I like giving the students a provocation or a question and then leading the following:
1. Put students in pairs.
2. One minute silent thinking.
3. Then in pairs, one person speaks for one minute whilst the other listens, then when timer goes, they swap.
4. The final step is that we go around the room and each person shares what their partner said with the class. This ensures they listen carefully to what their partner says, and it can alleviate some of the shyness or reluctance students may have when sharing their own ideas.

I used a "random name generator" which is like a wheel where you put the students' names in and when it lands on their name, they have to respond.

I find the language focus allows students to approach the learning experience differently. I usually give them TOK style questions about the text we are reading and they think about the questions independently. They then share with their group and students may question each other on the responses they have come up with. After this small group discussion they will discuss with the class and we will have a whole class discussion.

I also use hot seating to get to deepen the students understanding of certain ideas and concepts. So the class will come up with questions we will ask the person in the hot seat. I usually provide the students with questions stems so they know to ask open ended questions. 
I would put this in 'rule light/prepared' because the class comes up with their own questions but it does have an element of being prepared as they have to pretend to be a certain person so are constrained to that character. ]]> 2021-11-24 09:58:29 UTC https://padlet.com/rebeccacoleman5/pijg22n3zeu7z4x2/wish/1910276225 Cooperative JIGSAW https://padlet.com/rebeccacoleman5/pijg22n3zeu7z4x2/wish/1912373551 For speaking practice, I always use only COOPERATIVE classroom approach and call it a JIGSAW. It means students change seats throughout the entire class and every time have a different interlocutor. For instance, they sit in pairs and have names. A row next to the wall are As, next to the aisle are Bs. A students always sit in the same place, whereas B students always move around. The point is to ensure each round has a pair of different composition.

Before that - everybody choose their topic from a list (e.g. Global warming is an illusion / Fur coats should be forbidden) and come having prepared an argumentative essay where they were asked to present 2 clear arguments with passives, participles, adequate vocabulary, clear structure etc. 

Student A presents the essay and B during that time works out at least 3 critical questions. After A has presented the essay orally (no reading), B asks questions and the process develops into a spontaneous talk for some 7 minutes. From very prepared and rule-heavy the process moves onto spontaneous and rule-light. Besides, everybody learns writing in the first place. 

Then student B presents the essay, while A works out at least 3 questions. This develops into a heated discussion. Questions are unexpected and provoke the speaker to dig deeper and talk spontaneously. The process can go on until all As have spoken to all Bs or shorter. Motivation skyrockets and so do interactive skills.  Goda
