This document is a quote by one of the most famous Jazz musicians by the name of Jelly Roll Morton. He had started playing the piano and singing Jazz in a brothel (sporting house) at the age of fourteen. When his grandmother found out he was playing music at these sporting houses she kicked him out of her house. He was so passionate about his music he did not want to give up on it so easily. Jazz was a delight to some people, but to others found Jazz to be controversy. The more popular it became the more critics saw it was liberating and sensuous. This quote surprised me about the negative outlooks on Jazz when it was created. I found it interesting that music could create such hate between some people, but also bring others together.

This is a newspaper clipping from February 1, 1921. It was printed by a paper called Clayton's Monthly in Seattle, Washington. The paper mentions the making of Jazz was inspired by the African Jungle. The newspaper also talks about the deep significance of Jazz and how Jazz spread almost instantly around America. Jazz had even made its way into churches. I found this paper interesting because it explains Jazz's path to America. The paper is supporting the wide spread of Jazz and explains the deeper emotions found in Jazz. It also explains some of the conflict that came with the instant spread of Jazz throughout America.

This primary document shows the lyrics to one of the most popular jazz songs sung by the famous artist, Louis Armstrong. The reason for this song being so popular in the 1920s was because of the message it sent all across America. As said in the lyrics "And I think to myself, what a wonderful world." saying how no matter what is going on in the world or what time of day, the world will always be wonderful. This song was released in 1967 and although it wasn't in the 1920s, the song would not have gotten the attention that it did if the creation of jazz did not become so popular. Lastly, the other thing that the song touches on is the idea of babies and how they will eventually grow up to learn so much about life and its even more spectacular to get the privilege to live in this world. Although this song had a great message, many other jazz songs had the same types of messages as well. This is why "What a Wonderful World" proves how jazz really impacted the community.

The 1920’s was a decade beginning the music era. The 20’s were nicknamed the Jazz Age. Jazz was created in a black community in New Orleans. African American musicians gathered together to improvise and share their music with one another in Storyville, New Orleans. Jazz is a difficult style of music to define. It is a combination of both European and African styles. The music relies on improvisation, syncopated rhythms, and is subjective as well. Jazz bands, at first, only consisted of cornets, clarinets, trombones, and a rhythm group. Jazz has an enormous effect culturally to the nation. Jazz was the influence to fashion, youth culture, dancing, as well as race relations. Jazz was categorized by “jazz”, played by African Americans, and “White Jazz”, played by white musicians due to the segregation of the 1920’s. Later on an extremely popular Jazz musician, Louis Armstrong, used his music to help break down some racial barriers and bringing people together.

Jazz was a type of music that was created mainly in the 1920's. Many different cities were impacted by jazz more than others, and these included New York, Chicago, New Orleans, and Kansas City. Although these cities were most popular with jazz music the idea of this genre affected many cities around America. As jazz began to expand the culture of African Americans became more and more aware. This is because a majority of the people who preformed jazz music had an African American background which found a way to get through America. There were many messages spread throughout all of jazz music that impacted the way that our country was influenced. Jazz was a happy type of music that effected society in a positive way. Even today, jazz continues to influence people by the positive and uplifting beats that create a great atmosphere. Many people listen to popular jazz music from the 1920s on the daily. It is the kind of music that makes people want to get up and dance to whoever is preforming the music. That is why the culture of African Americans began to become known since everyone seemed to enjoy the music. As far as the creation of jazz music goes, many people have positively been impacted by the great musical ideology of this wonderful genre.
