I have been reading the novel A Dance With Dragons, which was written by George R.R. Martin (GRRM). I greatly enjoy this book because I find GRRM to have an incredibly engrossing writing style. He uses metaphors and similes in imaginative and unique ways. It's taken me six months to get to this last book, yet I never want to stop.

"How would the story have been altered if the character had acted differently?"
If Mary Maloney had not killed her husband, he likely would have left her for another woman. Throughout the story, there are numerous hints at him cheating on his wife, which is made especially apparent when watching the movie adaptation, when his fellow police officers discuss his cheating. However, in the story, we are only left to assume this outcome from a carefully placed blank space in the story, after which he states that he's leaving her and he'll continue to support her financially. If Mary had not killed him, the story would have progressed with him leaving her for another woman and her raising their child on her own, with financial support from him.

While there are many philosophical quotes from East of Eden, I chose the follow line due to its visual simplicity yet unexpected depth: “All great and precious things are lonely.” I believe that what the writer meant by this quote is that when you reach a level of unsurpassed status, such as an extraordinary athlete, world renowned model, or any equivalent ranking, they reach a unique state of mind. Because of this special mindset, others will struggle to understand them on a deep level, making them lonely.

For my current issues novel, I am reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. The main conflict of this book is subtle and internal, but when analysed, is clearly between Arnold and his identity. Throughout the entire book, he can't summarise his identity as any single portion of it. Some call him white, others native, others a combination of the two. Arnold himself is rendered unable to find his identity, however. These people try to summarise Arnold as a race, but Arnold is just a person trying to find his identity like many other teenagers.
