Throughout the story, there are numerous hints at him cheating on his wife, which is made especially apparent when watching the movie adaptation, when his fellow police officers discuss his cheating. However, in the story, we are only left to assume this outcome from a carefully placed blank space in the story, after which he states that he's leaving her and he'll continue to support her financially.
