I rate this book 4 1/2 stars. I think that this book was really good and probably one of my favorite books that we have read as a class. I thought that Winston was a very complex and interesting character, and I personally really like to read about dystopias and see what the authors version of a dystopia actually is.

Winston: Winston is a complex character that can remember some of the past that he is not supposed to remember. Winston is an average Joe, but his primary trait is rebellious. He does not want to fit into the mold that the party may give him, and he is always curious and questioning things, which essentially leads to his end.

Julia: She is rebellious her entire life and while Winston just started being a bit of a rebel, she has hopped over the party laws almost for her entire life. Winston and Julia are in love and they get in trouble by a thought police together.

In the crazy society that is 1984, there are 3 countries- oceania, eastasia, and eurasia. They are always in war with each other, and once one war is stopped, another starts. In the book, we follow a middle aged man named Winston, who realizes that they are living in a dystopia and wants to do something about it. We follow him as he goes through a journey of rebellion, self discovery and betrayal.

fiction that is similar to 1984

I think that the book divergent could be compared to 1984. In the book divergent, it is about 12 different sectors and basically the government chooses what sector you will go into based on what you are like and based on your personality. The book is written as futuristic and has alot of technology that doesn’t exist. I think this is similar because 1984 is a modern written book for when George wrote it.

What does this book teach us?

I think that this book teaches us what our world could be like and what it actually is like. I think that when people read it they will be a little more cautious of the government and make sure that they will never live in a world that Winston does. The message that the author is trying to send I think is to be thankful that we have an opinion to share, and we have a right to share it out loud and that we don’t have to be monitored every second by the government. I think that the point in writing this novel was showing people the consequences of embracing a certain groups values, and how the advancement of technology could come to our dismay.

There has been outrage recently over a device called the amazon echo or the amazon Alexa. This is a device that is powered on by simply saying hey Alexa and she supposedly tried to follow Whatever you say. Allegedly she has been hearing what you are saying and turning on and replying to what people are saying without being provoked. This has sparked outrage that the device is listening to conversation and outrage that it is going somewhere. This is just like the factor in the book where they are monitored at all times by not just the government, but also the thought police on their simple TVs.
