Aleigha, Allison, Stephanie, Rachael

- Multicultural education should not be viewed as separate from basic education.

- Learning multicultural education is just as important as learning math, science, reading, etc.

- Multicultural education is not equal to monocultural education

- Monocultural education reflects only one reality and is biased toward the dominant group. Excludes many people's perspectives and deprives diversity.

- Monocultural education is an incomplete education, whereas multicultural education is a complete education

- Monocultural education is especially evident in the arts and social sciences

- at the very least, students should be required to take a foreign language class, as it introduces them to another cultural perspective

- Basic education allows all children a higher chance at receiving the best education possible.

- Social Justice - a philosophy, an approach , and actions that embody treating all people with fairness, respect, dignity, and generosity.
- Multicultural education with social justice perspective also means learning to question the status quo and power structures (Students learn they have power and can make changes)
- Ex. High school students last year did walk out over gun control and holding public forums.
- Education must address distribution of power, status, and ethics.
- A survey shows that schools are failing at teaching students appreciation for the First Amendment, leading to social justice becoming an empty construct.
- Schools should encourage and even plan multicultural discussions.
- These discussions can bring light to poverty, discrimination, war, and the national budget.
