Once Marcus returns to school, he is greeted with a new Social Studies teacher named Mrs.Andersen. Then, Mrs.Andersen teaches a lesson on when the government has the rights to ignore the Bill of Rights. This lesson outrages Marcus and he is sent to the Principal's office.

In this case, Marcus spoke up whenever Mrs. Andersen asked if there were any ways the government could revoke a citizen’s basic human rights and whenever he was talking to the principal about what happened earlier in class. As we see later on, Marcus does the same thing when it came to talking with the reporters over Xnet. He is one to strongly voice his opinion and that makes this topic a huge theme throughout the novel. Most people who live or are from there are known to be highly free thinking individuals who aren’t afraid to stand up for there rights. 
In Little Brother, a little bit of the history was touched upon, starting with the hippies, yippies, and many peaceful protests.
