I'm grateful for the jokes, the laughter, the light you brought everywhere, for making our campus a family, for making a stressful environment a happy place to work, the cookouts, the football jokes over the intercom, the calm tone when I was stressed, for seeing the goodness in me when I didn't see it in myself, for bringing out the best in me, for the days off maybe I wasn't technically supposed to take but you knew some things mattered more in life, for TRULY caring, and for the jumper cables I still have in my car, because you gave me a jump and told me to take them in case I got stuck again. For all these things and much more. I miss you Mr. Corn. Words will never express the difference you made.

Before there was Dude Perfect, there was basketball at the Corn's house. In 1990, I had just gotten a VHS camcorder and was getting ready for our first son Jeff to be born, so I had some fun playing around with the camera. I'm so glad I captured some of my great friends having fun playing basketball. Today we take it for granted that we always have a camera in our pockets, but I'm glad I converted this over to digital format and edited it down. This is one of my many great memories Roger. He's the one in the pink tank top.
~ Jimmie Hackworth, Jr.

For a few years, some folks were afraid to send their kids to North Crowley High School. But having a friend like Roger as an AP there, reassured me that my boys and my niece (and kids from our youth group) were safe there. Many times at football games when others may have been frazzled, he was always calm and could talk easily to disruptive kids and parents. One time he told me of a time when he was sitting in his office monitoring video cameras and noticed my son about to enter a room where a fight was going on, so he rushed from his office and was able to settle things down before my son entered the door. Roger was a great school administrator and respected by many students and parents.
~ Jimmie Hackworth, Jr.

He had the whole charter bus on a UMYF ski trip going for hours about a poodle on an airplane with a brick in his mouth. If you were there, you remember. We all thought it was gonna be the cigar. I still give Roger credit for that stupid joke every time I make my kids mad telling it. I think he may have actually stolen the jokes from his dad, PopCorn. What great memories with all the Corn family! Love you guys!

Shayne

Her response was, “if I stay Roger won’t be himself.” Sure enough, after she left Roger turned into this social butterfly, jumping around, laughing, joking. He was really funny and had this crazy wonderful smile. When I think of Roger that smile comes to mind first. After an AP left North Crowley that was in charge of state testing, I had to work closely with Roger to get things ready. I had to “train” him in ALL things testing and it got to be a joke every time I would tell him something else that we had to do, he would say, “that’s stupid.” I would say, I know but we have to do it. When we were getting it packed up, we were searching for 1 missing answer document. I thought Roger was going to rub his forehead off!! We finally found it and all was good again. After that, Roger had a new respect for anyone in charge of state testing!

Ambi Gordon

Our memories are inclusive of them as a whole, Roger, Brenda, Steve, Gay, and Jerry (also known lovingly as PopCorn). We have fond memories of spending time together. Todd remembers that one time when he beat Roger at basketball. (That ONE time, HAHA!) Ski Trips. Youth Camps, Hanging out at the Corn’s: swimming, basketball, fireworks, eating, fun. A few years ago running into him at football playoffs. We both remember him as friend, but also family. When Robin saw him in June and we both saw him in January it was like we never missed a day.

Though I went to high school with Roger, I didn’t really get to know him until he coached and taught at CHS9 and I taught at CHS. He brought the football highlights to me each week, and we jammed to 80s music while I added it to the video. The highlights were shown each week to the student body. Our paths crossed again when he was associate principal at NCHS at the time I was hired there. In fact he was probably a big reason I was hired as I interviewed in the summer during the time most administrators were on vacation. The AP who interviewed me called him (on his vacation) to ask if he knew me and thought I would do well. During the NCHS years, he encouraged me when I felt defeated, consoled me when I was upset, and laughed with me too many times to count. I know anyone who ever worked with him could and would say the same. I went to my classroom and bawled the day we were told he was leaving CHS for CLC, and I know plenty of my colleagues did as well. I didn’t see or talk to him much after his time at NCHS, but the times I did, he still encouraged, consoled and laughed. The world has lost a good man.

Liska Lewis Best 🦅 🐾

Coach Peden - My first teaching job

About ten years ago I was fresh out of college and had just finished my alternative certification. I applied for several teaching jobs but when I found the science teacher/swim coach position at NCHS I knew it was the job I wanted more than anything. I interviewed with Mr. Smith, Coach Brakel and Mr. Corn and I was so nervous, terrified actually but he was the one who smiled and made me feel just comfortable enough that I could answer their questions. I couldn’t believe it when I was offered the job. Over the next two years at NCHS Mr. Corn was always there whenever I was frustrated or needed help, and he gave some of the best advice for dealing with students. As an AP he always supported his teachers and made them feel important. When I left NCHS he wrote me a glowing recommendation letter. I will always be grateful for the chance they took on me because they gave me my first opportunity in the classroom. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the guidance, support and encouragement of Mr. Corn. I am so grateful for him and I know he will be missed by many. Thank you for believing in me!

Best Mentor to a Baby Teacher Laura Crain

Mr. Corn interviewed me one on one per the request of my best friend and called to hire me that same afternoon. To say I was a high maintenance baby teacher would be an understatement, but his door was literally always open and any time I popped in I got that Roger smile and a welcome to sit and talk away the issue of the day. We all make plenty of mistakes when we first start out and I made my fair share. He never made me feel bad, but reminded me that there is always a path forward, no matter the mistake. He encouraged me every year at my annual review saying “I think your an amazing teacher. What do you need from me to help you?” I had no idea how spoiled I was by him until I left NoCrow and found that “open door policy” is not a literal thing everywhere. He threw lots of challenges at me over the 5 years I was there, but when I asked for help, he always gave it, with that same grin that reminded me that all problems have solutions. I have thought of him often since I left NoCrow and wished many times that they (principals) could all be like him.

One of the kindest and most sincere people you'll ever meet!!! I had just finished my Texas Teachers Program and I'm looking for jobs weeks before school starts (so I'm pretty stressedI..at this point I know the last hire these schools want is someone with an alternative certification. Through lots of prayer, God gifted me with 3 interviews and God graced me with all 3 offers. I didn't know what I'd choose at this point. Mrs. Neal, Mr. Corn's AP, told me that I had all the makings of a wonderful teacher, but that she said that the only thing that might not get me the job would be my experience, but she said to contact her if I'd need any recommendations. It was literally that afternoon that Mr. Corn called me and said something like, "well Mr. George, I want to get straight to the point, we want you..." I asked him if it was okay to pray about it and talk with my wife. He said, "let me know, but definitely talk to the boss and pray about it, but get back with me because we want you." Oh man, was I just happy. I received about 4 more calls over the next few days from Mr. Corn and I just felt that it was God calling me over to CLC and I know in my heart that it was. Mr. Corn was exactly who I needed to start my career in teaching with. He was always positive, caring, and could see things that others could not. He cared about the kids, yes, but he also deeply cared about his teachers, and it was felt. Mr Corn wasn't with us last year do to his illness, but I did receive Teacher of the Year, and I credit so much of that award to Mr. Corn and his love and gift that he chose to take me on at a school that thrives on experience. God is good and Mr. Corn will always be a part of my life and through my teachings. Thank you Mr. Corn!!!

Anytime I needed something delivered to his office, there were a ton of volunteers! Roger was a class act and a great mentor. "D" will miss him terribly.

I will miss having him for that quick pick me up he always gave. It was nice in service today to be reminded of all the little things he would do like when he would say "It'll be alright" in that dismissive relaxed tone, which instantly made realize you were overreacting to something that didn't matter. Or the story of the catcher which he told me last year on a visit to CLC. I had begun to forget those little things. But I will never forgot how he made me feel. Mr. Corn truly was a catcher and caught me more times than I can recall. I can only pray and hope that one day I will be that for others.-Cristina Snoke

Oh, how can I forget the time Ms. Yoshi dropped off her resume with you and you sent her to me, just another of your many pranks 😂😂😂 . No I can’t forget the time the angry parent was mad at me and threatened to sue me and the school if her son ever got hurt while he skipped school. I sent her to you and you told her the exact same thing I told her, but you were so cool that she was fine.

Man, I really enjoyed those 2 years we worked together. We had an amazing boss and great co-workers. We are so sad to see that you are no longer with us physically, but you are in all of our hearts.

One love, brother! ❤️👍🏿😥

I have always had great respect for him, even when he reminded me of my bratty little brother hiding my favorite pen (he said I stole it from him- he was right) or showing video he saved of me tripping.... over my skirt... He even had popcorn ready. He mentored our students and they all knew he cared about them- they couldn’t have had a better influence in their lives.

Gay and Jerry along with Sam (my father) and Eustolia Torrez and my family watched a CRAZY final three minutes of that game. Most of the scoring happened near the end of the game and Roger’s team scored last and beat my Horned Frogs. It was a great night that I will always remember
