Some students will need encouragement in order to voice opinions, ask questions, they will have to learn how to make choices and how to participate in their learning community. I do believe that schools will be challenged to review their curriculum, their schedules and structures to really promote play and live up to the enhanced PYP. Eloïse

I imagine that some schools will need years to create this learning space in order to get open-ended materials, blocks, costumes, artifacts for role-plays, etc. I imagine that schools will have to be creative, resourceful and inventive when designing these learning spaces.
Early Years - The complexity of language

"Students use play to make meaning and understandings of the world, and to develop oral language and symbolic competence. They share personal experiences and understandings through talk, play, shared stories and collaborative exploration. By listening attentively, teachers discover students’ language expertise and mental models. Using this knowledge, teachers plan and create learning experiences that extend students’ language capabilities. This knowledge can then be documented on a student’s language portrait." This could be an opportunity for teachers to really have permission to give credit to children's symbolic language as the core of assessment. This could of course also be a challenge if a school is currently more focused on traditional literacy outcomes to assess progress. - Kate

"Young students’ development is supported when hands-on learning is combined with student-initiated play. A careful consideration exists between student-initiated play and teacher-initiated experiences. Play provides benefits for cognitive, social, emotional and physical development for students from all socio-economic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and offers authentic opportunities for students to begin their exploration and development of the IB learner profile." A challenge I see here for some teachers is to recognise that student initiated play has equal importance to teacher directed experiences and that play IS inquiry. Giving themselves permission to observe and document rather than 'teaching' is key here teamed with opportunities to reflect with colleagues to play what happens next. A challenge but such an exciting shift! - Kate

"Students take initiative, express interest and wonderings, make choices and are aware of their learning goals. They are actively engaged, and monitor and adjust their learning as needed." For some teachers allowing students to adjust their own learning could be a huge shift away from current practice. This requires teachers to not only give students ownership but also to trust them to make decisions about learning that are best for them. I look forward to seeing how this is interpreted in classrooms.

This is really empowering for teachers to dig deep into their own values about learning and education.

''Agency is the power to take meaningful and intentional action, and acknowledges the rights and responsibilities of the individual, supporting voice, choice and ownership for everyone in the learning community''
The new concept is being introduced AGENCY which is the capacity to act internationally and to valuing agency begins by accepting that students are capable learners and natural inquirer. The challenges are that this needs a lot of support in many ways of collaborating and co-constructing learning and learning goals , also creating a culture of respect. Creating learning environments to support social and emotional well-being is required. All the organising structure need to work together to achieve and approach success.( Shaimaa
