Snapchat can be a positive social media just like facebook can, but I am unsure if many people think of the negative effects snapchat has on a teen or tween. It can be positive because it connects you with friends. Snapchat was first intended for people to send nudes and other sexual pictures or videos, they are there… 10 seconds later they are gone. Never to be seen again. So people thought until their pictures started flowing around their highschool. This happened to one of my friends. That there is a part of security and everyone can make a snapchat. It does not matter your age, you can lie, or even your background. Snapchat is the breeding ground for 🤬 offenders. They can prey on young children. Also, the mental health of young ones. Kids who are on snapchat, become anxious, lonely and develop depression and very low self esteem . The kids on Snapchat sit there looking at all these people. Some they know some they don’t know thinking wow why can’t i be so pretty, skinny, or like they like to say nowadays “thick.” Young ones will get bullied on this site more than others due to the fact of it disappearing. Snapchat is a big place for cyberbullying to take place. But so are all the social media sites. So how i got way off topic but enjoy! Students and kids who are cyber bullied are 2 times more likely to kill them self. Bullying impacts around 5 million youth a year. 34% of that is cyberbullying. 60% of the kids who report it says they have a harder time in school. If a kid is getting cyberbullied they are more likely to self harm. How can we fix this!!??

Parents should be knowing the signs that their kid is getting cyberbullied via snapchat or social media. Talk to your kids. Send them to therapy. If I was in therapy then I would have turned out a heck of alot better!. Parents just know the sign. Monitor kids' social media and if they fight you on it remind them who pays the phone. If you are an adult having these problems delete the app. You'll be okay. There is so much more to this world than your phone and social media. Snapchat is NOT healthy to anyone.

https://meganmeierfoundation.org/statistics
https://informaconnect.com/the-dangers-of-snapchat-on-mental-health/

LinkedIn is a social networking site tailored around job seeking. It gives users a platform where they can contact employers around the world. LinkedIn provides an online location for people to engage with other professionals, join groups, post blogs, and share information. Although it is a great place to bolster your career it does have some negative side effects for a user’s mental state. Looking at other users achievements and experiences can affect your self esteem. There will be competitive people that may be more eligible for the job requirements. For those that are insecure about their resume may feel even more insecure after looking at their colleagues.

Compared to other job sites like Meetup and AngelList, LinkedIn is the most professional and most popular site out of them all. Meetup is far too casual while AngelList has a very low user activity rate. This makes LinkedIn almost mandatory when it comes to job seeking online. One problem with LinkedIn is the amount of private information that people put on their profile. To prevent your information from being exposed, you can control how much of your information shows for non-contacts by going to security settings. Preventing non-contacts from viewing your information may also reduce a person’s insecurity.

https://medium.com/the-post-grad-survival-guide/how-linkedin-causes-anxiety-c3176a41218e

https://itstillworks.com/safe-linkedin-4022.html

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/n/networking.asp

Instagram is a popular social media app that people can use to post pictures and short videos. Unfortunately, Instagram posts now include many pictures of unrealistic body types and glamorous lifestyles which are exposed to the youth. Heavy Photoshop has now become the new norm on social media which has a negative effect on body image. According to a survey, by the RSPH, Instagram was ranked last place for being the most negative for mental health. Body image and loss of sleep were the two most negative for users on Instagram. In that same survey, it showed that YouTube, a video streaming platform, had a much healthier impact on a person’s well-being. It scored the highest in health awareness, self-expression and community building, but it was high on lack of sleep for users.

Personally, I’ve seen many how the guidelines of have changed for YouTube and saw it grow into a much-restricted platform which can be a positive and a negative. There are also many videos for every type of viewer to either educate or entertain. The whole platform is customized to show the types of videos that the view would like which is why I think it has a positive impact on people. I’ve seen the opposite with Instagram. People are constantly comparing their bodies or lifestyles to these famous social influencers, in results, it causes insecurities and sadness.

Instagram has been in many scandals in which people’s information such as phone numbers, locations and names get accessed or become in danger of getting hacked. Millions of people are put in a vulnerable position when their private information can be accessed by anyone. A good way to stay safe to limit the amount of information that you put out on social media. Locations and phone numbers should not be available for strangers to see. Social media has plenty of benefits, but it comes with many disadvantages that can hurt a person in the long run.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2019/09/12/new-instagram-hack-exclusive-facebook-confirms-user-accounts-and-phone-numbers-at-risk/#5badd5082200

https://www.inc.com/jason-aten/instagram-just-acknowledged-it-has-a-much-bigger-privacy-problem-than-we-thought.html

Snapchat is a great social media app for people to communicate with friends and to post interesting things that happen throughout your day. Now, before I get into all the research telling you about how bad Snapchat is for your wellbeing and you should not download the app, I want to take a minute to say how much I love the app. It is how I communicate with all my friends and a great way to connect with others. Anyway, getting into the research part, research shows that over the past ten years, the suicide rate has increased due to the usage of social media. For people, ages 16-24 studies show that Snapchat is addictive and can cause poor sleep, depression, and anxiety. For the wellbeing of other people, Snapchat should not be used more than one hour each day. One primary security concern is that once you send a snap, it disappears and can never be viewed again unless it is screenshotted by the recipient. Most teens believe that because the snap goes away, it is safe to send snap such as nudes because they will disappear after a while. However people can screenshot anything they want on the app, so you have to be careful with what you post and send to other people just the same as if you were using any separate social media app.

https://smartsocial.com/effects-of-snapchat-teens/
https://informaconnect.com/the-dangers-of-snapchat-on-mental-health/

For this topic discussion on security and well-being I chose to talk about the up and coming social media platform Spotify. Although it is not widely characterized as a social media platform, it is extremely popular with 286 million monthly users. Spotify, with its integration with Facebook and Twitter, has allowed listeners to leverage their following on those social networks, simultaneously creating a social platform of their own. In mid-April Spotify launched "Daily Wellness: A mindful mix of music and podcasts." This initiative combines that curative foundation with short lessons to help users infuse wellness into their daily routines. The Daily Wellness playlist is curated to match your listening habits. The playlist refreshes twice a day. In the morning the playlist focuses on motivation and includes inspirational quotes, intention-setting prompts, and positive words through music and dialogue. In the evening, the playlist shifts to help you unwind with mindfulness meditation and relaxing music. According to Shainna Ali Ph.D., she found six common coping strategies that are often embedded in mental health practice: (1) breathing techniques, (2) inspirational quotes, (3) mindfulness skills, (4) guided meditation, (5) body awareness, and (6) gratitude practice.

As far as security concerns go, in my experience as a daily user of Spotify, I have not experienced any security breaches or anything like that but when I researched security concerns within the platform I was surprised by how many problems a lot of other people have when using Spotify. There have been many cases of harassment on Spotify. Because the platform doesn’t allow blocking a single user, people are left vulnerable to people monitoring their listening and then using that information to intimidate them. The only solution to this problem would be to add a block feature so in the instance of harassment it would be easy to mitigate the problem by blocking the person harassing you.
https://www.campaigncreators.com/blog/spotify-the-social-network/
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/modern-mentality/202004/can-spotifys-daily-wellness-boost-your-mental-health
https://choosetoencrypt.com/privacy/spotify-streaming-service-offers-little-privacy-protection/

TikTok is a Chinese video-sharing social networking. It is used to create lip-sync, short dance, comedy and talent videos. TikTok's popular video sharing app is used world wide. It has 800 million active users worldwide and 45.4 million users in the United States. The global audience consist of 56% users are male and 44% are female. Roughly 50% is under the age of 34. TikTok has no real competition yet. In November 2018 Facebook released a TikTok competitor named Lasso. Lasso has been heard from very little since its debut. Early 2020, Vine's cofounder launched an app called Byte in which has seen some initial success in download numbers but nothing compared to TikTok. By the end of 2020, YouTube plans to launch an in-app rival. TikTok has had multiple security vulnerabilities, according to a new report from cybersecurity firm Check Point. It states that hackers could take control of someone's TikTok account and manipulate the content, upload and delete videos and reveal personal information such as a private email address and your location. In my opinion, hackers can access anything on the web, your credit card when online shopping, your personal or business email and online banking. The way to prevent this is to not put any of your personal stuff on the internet. When people do put their personal information on the internet, online fraud detection vendors are there to that detect and prevent fraudulent activity. People are also concerned that the Chinese government could be using the data that TikTok collects to spy on people around the world. This is why the United States Air Force and Navy have already banned this app and the Army has been advising people not to use this app. There is also a big controversy over the popular video sharing app TikTok being a place where predators can make contact with your kids. I feel like adults should be monitoring their children's social media accounts until they move out on their own.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwig4riDndTpAhXuct8KHfFMCroQFjAAegQIARAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wbrc.com%2F2020%2F02%2F06%2Ftik-tok-app-can-be-meeting-place-predators-your-kids%2F&usg=AOvVaw2VdoDzQuXNyqfHEZjm3GC9

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiM2oa7ntTpAhXJl-AKHaZOD4IQFjAHegQIEBAG&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.oberlo.com%2Fblog%2Ftiktok-statistics&usg=AOvVaw0vGvzgOKlTa1VgyLK1o8qL

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjK74fdodTpAhUDheAKHY36CuYQFjAAegQIBBAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.businessinsider.com%2Fus-government-agencies-have-banned-tiktok-app-2020-2&usg=AOvVaw3iKtQkq3clPhUjOQAiwlW_

Facebook is a well known social media site. It allows you to connect and share with family and friends online. Facebook has more than 1 million users worldwide making it the largest social network. Facebook, along with all social media, had it's pros and cons. A few cons that social media have are that is may be a platform for cyberbullying, people tend to isolate themselves , increase in procrastination, social skills decline, etc. I have seen families comment well wishes, birthday wishes, get well condolences and many other personal things on Facebook in place of a phone call, visit, card or letter. That lessens the worth in my opinion. I have seen happy people go onto Facebook and watched as their attitude/emotion shifted. I had gotten into such a habit of checking my Facebook posts that it was interrupting things that should have had higher priorities. Again, not all social media is bad. I see the most inspiring video or pictures that I wouldn't have searched for or seen if it wasn't for Facebook. What I have witnessed is that for every bad article or negative, there is at least 5 positives. The Facebook posts stay current to our times. For example, during this pandemic, I have seen video after video of good people, neighbors, family, strangers, going above and beyond for others. Another pro for Facebook and or mental well being is the ease of staying in touch. Although not a personal and no preference of mine, you can quickly check in on someone, view pictures and videos. Facebook allows you to check in to locations that later will appear in Facebooks Time Hop feature that reminds you of that event. It's the digital way of flipping through a photo album.
There are also security issues to consider with Facebook. In 2018, CNBC announced they discovered a security issue that allowed hackers to access information that could have let them take over around 50 million accounts. With Facebook having to use you personal details to set up an account, that's a problem. Also, Facebook can be used a a payment source between people, A security problem could put your financial information in a hackers hands. As I said previously, not just Facebook has these issues. All social media share some of these cons. I think the best way to mitigate security issues is by limiting access to social accounts. Limit, not eliminate.
Also, monitor what's happening on your social media accounts.
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/28/facebook-says-it-has-discovered-security-issue-affecting-nearly-50-million-accounts-investigation-in-early-stages.html
https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/facebook101/what-is-facebook/1/

The reason I choose Facebook because it has been with us the longest out of all the popular sites. Facebook is a great way to catch up with family and friends. The social media site offers a lot of things for the users to use. But Facebook can also come with some bad. Studies show that 33% of teenagers ranging from 12 to 17 have been cyberbullied. It's not good at all for the kids mental health. Why because some resort to suicide. I'm not saying facebook is the cause of it . But Facebook has so many features that can be hidden. Like now they have private messaging and private groups that can be made. They can make almost everything private or public to where they only have a certain few to see it. the security is probably not the best. But it definitely has gotten better. People have trusted the site enough to put their personal informations on the site. But what happens if you get hacked , now that hacker has your information. I do think better change will come.

Instagram is an extremely popular social media site used most commonly in people between the ages of 14-24. The way that Instagram works is you have a page where you can see the posts of people who you follow. You can scroll for an endless amount of time. This social media platform utilizes likes to display popularity on a post. The number of followers someone has also relays an image of their level of popularity. Once a post is made, the public is then free to comment or do whatever they want to do on the post. Instagram is commonly used to bully others and manipulate them. As someone who was cyber bullied through this social media platform, I have personally seen the toll that it takes on your mental health. People will use anything these can find to make you feel as though you are worthless. Social Media contributes to the reason why 13% of teens commit suicide. Seeing skinny, pretty models on Instagram is common, this leads many people to compare themselves to these unrealistic people. This comparison takes a toll on one’s mental health, leading to issues such as depression and anxiety. The reason why Instagram takes a greater toll on mental health is because it is one of the few social media platforms that gains users by its utilization of likes.

The major issue with security in Instagram is that it lacks the type of security needed to protect users from hackers who could potentially steal their information. Any hackers could reset someone’s account and have access to any personal information they have put on their account. Most social media sites have a feature that prevents anyone but the owner from accessing the account, but Instagram does not. The owners of Instagram need to fix this bug in the app and that would eliminate the major security concern.

https://blog.pcc.com/social-media-self-esteem-and-teen-suicide

https://www.digitalinformationworld.com/2019/07/security-flaw-hacker-instagram-account.html

https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=9231&context=dissertations

Instagram is a popular social media platform. It allows users to post pictures and videos about their lives and lets them connect with other users. Unfortunately, the platform is associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, and, bullying. Social media post often sets unrealistic expectations and can cause some to feel inadequate with low self-esteem. Instagram is considered one of the easiest platforms to make girls feel as though their bodies are not good enough. Heavy editing and photoshop give off the impression of unrealistic body types and lifestyles. In a recent survey out of five social media platforms, Youtube came in first with the only net positive score of any social media platforms. Twitter came in second, then Facebook, Snapchat, and ending with Instagram coming in last for the negative impacts on the mental well-being of the users. Body-image, self identity, and lack of sleep were the top negative points for Instagram users.

Instagram is owned by Facebook and recently they have discovered some security vulnerabilities that leave the users and their data at risk. Their data being their name and phone numbers, which is a direct link to the users and all an “attacker” needs to target them. Facebook has confirmed that they have updated the security settings making it safer for all users, but despite that users should still limit the amount of information they put online. Names, locations, and phone numbers should not be put out there for just anyone to see.

https://time.com/4793331/instagram-social-media-mental-health/

https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2019/09/12/new-instagram-hack-exclusive-facebook-confirms-user-accounts-and-phone-numbers-at-risk/#7b9bdf6b2200

Instagram is characterized as the worst social media for a person's mental health as a result of the posts being a 'highlight reel' and not truly how life is for the user. On the outside, followers may begin to believe these filtered posts are how their lives should be and pick apart themselves. Compared to the parent company Facebook, another photo sharing site, the app still has its' users experiencing higher levels of anxiety and loneliness.

There was a security breach in 2019, which leaked users' phone numbers, real names, and other sensitive information. This was a result of a system that had become obsolete yet the company had not upgraded their security measures. In terms of this breach, there was no true way for users to be protected but to be very selective in what information you allow the app to access. The rule is to always think that any stranger could see your account and collect as much information as possible on you. Information like geotags and phone numbers put you in danger if in the wrong hands.

Links
https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakdoffman/2019/09/12/new-instagram-hack-exclusive-facebook-confirms-user-accounts-and-phone-numbers-at-risk/#2c8465532200
https://www.psychalive.org/worst-mental-health-instagram-facebook-youtube/

Most of us are very familiar with popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and even Twitter. But for this one, I want to focus on a platform that some may recognize, but not heavily used in the United States. Everyone, I would like to introduce you to WeChat.

WeChat, also known as Weixin, was first launched on January 21, 2011 by a Chinese company called Tencent and is one of the most used apps in Asia. Putting aside the basic features of messaging and calling, this app offers much more, such as browsing the internet, online shopping, personal deliveries, banking, and others. Because of these features, the Chinese often refers to WeChat as "the super app." The use of the app in many areas, including politics and court cases, further enhances that WeChat is being used for all demographics and instances. As of 2020, the MAU (monthly active users) reached 1.17 billion, an additional 70 million users from the first quarter of 2019.

Even though this sounds amazing from a general view, there are unfortunate drawbacks, especially in the area of one's own mental well-being. Since this app is not as popular in the U.S., little research has been made regarding the specific negatives, however it can be said that the excessive usage can showcase components of addictive behavior, according to Montag et al. In addition, other factors may include the increase of depression and anxiety; varying levels of narcissism can also be an issue due to one's own count of "likes" on the shared moments feature. This is not only exclusive to WeChat. In fact, these and other factors can be seen on any platform.

Taking into consideration of all the useful features that one can use if they live in Mainland China, one would think that all of their personal information would be kept safe from others. But this is simply not the case. An important feature that all apps should have is called the end-to-end encryption (E2EE), which keeps all messages between you and another party to yourselves. Because WeChat fails to incorporate this mechanism, it can be thought as inviting a friend over to your house and locking everything EXCEPT the back door (third parties can have access and take information that way). It became a huge issue that Members of Parliament were told not to use WeChat due to potential cybersecurity risks, as mentioned by Pinkerton. In order to mitigate this, Tencent really needs to consider adding the E2EE function to ensure trust from not only their targeted audience but to potential users from overseas.

Sources:
https://www.businessofapps.com/data/wechat-statistics/

https://qpsoftware.net/blog/all-wechat-features-2020

https://heimdalsecurity.com/blog/the-best-encrypted-messaging-apps/

https://ipolitics.ca/2019/07/05/mps-staff-warned-not-to-use-chinese-app-wechat-due-to-cybersecurity-risks/

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6297283/

If you are someone who uses social media then you are probably familiar with Snapchat. Snapchat is an app that was released on July 8, 2011, this app was originally intended for people to send sexual pictures to each other. While it is still used for that, most people use it as a casual app. On this app you can send a picture/video to any of your friends and it lasts for 10 seconds and then it goes away forever. I love this app and I have had it for many years. Although this is a good app it also may have an impact on some peoples mental well-being. For example, if someone sends a sexual picture the person they sent it to may screenshot it. That screenshot may spread around and that will have a major effect on anyone. I did some research about social media in the bigger picture and I found some information. On this site it says "People under the age of 25 use Snapchat for 40 minutes on average every day, more than Instagram’s latest stat for the same demographic." I also read that " young people who spend more than 2 hours per day on social media are more likely to report poor mental health, including psychological distress (symptoms of anxiety and depression)." In my opinion, I think kids under 14 shouldn't be able to have Snapchat, of course that would never happen but that would definitely help.

Citations
https://www.wacocsd.org/vnews/display.v/ART/5aabcd1e80205

Instagram has to be one of the worst social media platforms that targets young people’s mental health. This platform impacts depression, anxiety, body image, sleep and fear of missing out. Instagram is a place for people to portray their life in the best way possible and receive approval by the likes and followers they get and to validate their existence. The highlight reel is what people want to see. Behind all those images it’s a completely different person because they only show you what they want you to see.

They create this ideal life in a picture they choose to show, and it causes others to wish that they were living that life or have the body of their dreams that they see in an edited photo. Example, most girls on this platform get plastic surgery and Botox not only because they want to feel pretty but some are insecure with the way they look, and they think they have to get all these procedures done to fit in and feel accepted by society. This causes other young girls to want and get these procedures done because in this society that is considered the definition of beauty. Even with those who can’t afford it or constantly comparing themselves to others, that causes them to have low self-esteem and thoughts that they aren’t beautiful. This also goes for the guys too. I personally deal with this as of now, we all wish we could have what those “lucky” people have. But we all to understand that everything we see on social media is not exactly the way it is in real life. Every social media like Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook affects our mental health, they are all the same, but one is always worse than the other.

There has been a security issue on Instagram where people’s real names, Instagram account numbers and handles and phone numbers were exposed.
