Interesting play scene seemingly from an era of antiquated attitudes on the complexities of women. The inference is drawn that Mrs. Wright could have once been compared to the beauty, happiness, and song found in that of the canary. The joy of memory found in the canary by Mrs. Wright played out in vengeance upon Mr. Wright in the same manner the canary was taken, and likely with the undertones of her own stolen happiness.

Although the motivation may be pure, the message leaves no room for independent thought to the receiver. It reminded me of the submissive babbling of Adam Sandler to his mother's controlling commands on Waterboy.

Although the story acknowledges some degree of love for her husband, the premise of freedom to live her life unbridled was far greater. Enduring a lifetime submitted to the husband she thought she had been freed of, ultimately stole her resolve to live and she succumbed willingly to her disease.

It must have been the moment Mr. Wright broke the canary's neck.
