I loved Physics and the laws of Nature when I was at High School, but also when I was at middle school I wanted to become a scientist, I didn't know on what topic, but definitely I wanted to make experiments all my life long...I did it for 12 years. Science is amazing!
This year I have a grade 8 class, so, in the curriculum there is Space Science. I would like to introduce some activity on The Big Bang Theory. Groups will be provided od questions to answer. I will divide the class in different groups, boys and girls. Then we will discuss together about the answers.

I planned with my colleagues - teachers lot's of activities. For example we will create a model of space satelite. It will be our common work. I will involved boys and girls. We will collect information about Polish astronomers (Mikołaj Kopernik and Alex Wolszczan). We will take a photos of Earth from the space thanks to "Sally Ride EarthKAM" - I already invited also parents for this activity. Our students will observe the sky using telescopes. I also prepared kahoot quiz for students and parents about recognizing "space" movies. I hope it will be lot's of fun next week!

We can propose photos and videos about women scientist, women engineer etc also from human’s history and also women astronate from last periode. Almost all students love all those stories about black holes and the 'no-so scientifically-based' theories around them; so, they are curious to know more! This is the point that students are urged to investigate about scientists of both genders who have been outstanding through their theories and research on black holes (exploses, creation, substance, etc).
In this way I target for girls through activities that are designed for both boys and girls, students can easily outline the importance of both female and of different cultural backgrounds scientists in the field.

From watching the above, I have seen the importance of making real life connections for students, this is relevant for real life connections to not only the topic e.g batteries but also real life connections to persons / male and female who are working in scientific sectors, I would like students to do research projects on various scientists , both male and female and present these to the class and teach everyone them. Also, I think that gender balance within group work is important and to ensure all students have a role. To achieve this, I appoint roles within the group that are rotated with each activity to everyone gets an equal opportunity at being each role.

An activity-project idea I just had would combine both space topic and discovery of the "gender- mixed collaboration" dynamics for the students. HOW?

For that activity, the class would have to go through two different kinds of team forming. First phase would be to separate them in only-boys and only-girls teams [with exception of two mixed teams] and second phase would be for them all ending in mixed teams, consisting of both boys and girls. The space topic a would use would include a hypothetical scenario of the discovery of a new planet- one for each team. Shortly, this is how it would go:

First phase
STEP1: The "pure" teams [and the mixed two] are asked to shape a crew investigating a newly found planet. They must chose roles for each member of the crew. Then they'll be asked to start a research to find out as much as possible on the unknown planet (actually, design the planet by scratch). So, they all will end up with a model of the planet and the challenges its conditions pose (they must create some difficulties there). Each team establishes a problem/challenge that a hypothetical mission to their planet is faced with. They are also asked to build a space station on the planet.

STEP 2: The teams are asked to switch planets with one another, so that boy teams and one "mixed" team end up at "girl planets", girl teams and the other "mixed" team end up at "boy planets", one boy team ends up at the "mixed planet 1" and girl team ends up at mixed "planet 2 ". Now, they have to respond to the challenge posed by the previous planet makers and explore the space station designed by them.

STEP 3: Time to change the teams! "Pure" gender teams get mixed up, whereas the two initial "mixed" teams become only-boys/ only-girls. They continue working on their projects and keep track of their decisions, disagreements and ideas while doing it.

STEP 4: Presentation a) of each planet and space station by its designers and by the "visitors' team". b) of the mission and the ways the challenges were faced by the "visitors' team" and the designers.

STEP 5: Discussion based on the material produced throughout the project. What were the problem-solving methods used? When did the teams had more variety on ideas and practices? Did change of the teams affected their work and how? Did gender affected the initial roles they were chosen to hold as part of the crew? etc....
