The grasshoppers control the ants by serving them protection while the ants repay the favor by picking the food for them. The ants were always afraid of the grasshoppers because they were bigger and tougher so they thought they had to listen to them.

The relationship between the grasshoppers and the ants, are that the ants was serving the grasshoppers and if they don't listen to the grasshoppers, they will give the ants a punishment to their actions. Meaning, they were treated like slaves.
