1. Traditional buildings play an important economic role in our society today as an important part of tourism.  Many traditional buildings reflect the multi racial and multi cultural society of Singapore. This attracts tourists from all over the world to come to Singapore to visit such landmarks, and learn more about the history of Singapore. This hence provides economic revenue to Singapore, and hence it is untrue that these buildings play no purpose as they play a large economic purpose till today, and even towards the future.

2. These traditional buildings give us a sense of identity, as a common point of connection for the citizens. These buildings often serve a religious or cultural purpose, such as places of worship.

3. Traditional buildings have an important historical role in our society today, as they reflect our past culture and experiences. Eg: Buildings left over from colonial times
 
4. However, some might argue that these traditional buildings are a waste of space as they are not functional anymore and mostly serve an aesthetic purpose.

Tourists look for places they cannot find in their own countries so if we demolish in buildings, it will make our nation less unique resulting in less tourist visits.

The buildings can educate the youth on singapore's history. It is important to know where we have come from so that we will appreciate what we have today.

The buildings value is deteriorating. Buildings like offices, hospitals, hotels, schools will have more benefits than these historical buildings.



Point 1
Traditional Buildings provides economic value for Singapore. This buildings act as tourist attraction and help Singapore in their tourism industry. People travel to other countries to experience new changes and gain new insights. If Singapore becomes a city area, what's the point for others to come visit. Traditional buildings in Singapore play an important role. Due to their unique architecture style, or deep historical significance, many tourist would want to come and learn more about Singapore's Culture and History. This will enable nearby businesses or services to thrive due to visits from tourist. Lau Pa Sat is one of the oldest buildings located in Singapore to date. It was constructed during the 19th century and act as a market. Now the area has become a bustling area for hawkers to sell their delicacies and show off Singapore's hawker culture. Many tourist visit the building to experience hawker dining experience and taste the local cuisines. This helps increase the economy of Singapore.

Point 2
Traditional buildings have historical significance and educate the young on our history. History is very important as we will be better appreciate the contributions of our past generations. For  example, the dragon playground, shows our young generation how privileged  they are to have playgrounds with safe rubber flooring, signboards with safety guidelines, amongst many other safety precautions put in place to ensure their safety. This education of our history to the young generation is indeed very significant into understanding the past and improving it for the future


Point 3
Buildings are just like humans too. They are created, get old, and slowly expire. Just as how we change our goals and occupations in our life, buildings also take on different purposes throughout the course of its existence. For example, the old parliament house was repurposed into the arts house . However, some people fail to identify the crucial detail that while the building may be repurposed, it will still be remembered for its history. For example, the Arts House is still called as the Old Parliament house. Even if the purpose changes, its history and significance would not.

1. Tourism (geraldyne)
Traditional buildings do have a role to play in our future by driving the economy. Many of our traditional buildings are representative of the multi-racial and religious community we have here in Singapore. Tourists from over the world visit these landmarks when they visit Singapore to learn more about our diversity, which is something very unique to Singapore. Besides, the aesthetically pleasing architecture of these buildings makes them tourist hotspots. By attracting tourists, tourist spending in these areas are boosted, contributing to the economic growth of our country.

2. Sense of belonging (Ming)
- places where many citizens grew up with, sense of connection, places with memories, personal histories for the citizens
- needs to be some continuity and familiar places for Singaporeans to identify with and to call this place home

Traditional buildings do have a future in our society as they foster a sense of belonging in the citizens. Much of these traditional buildings are old buildings for which many citizens grew up with. These are places of much significance to them, where memories are forged and bonds are formed. These are places that are important in their own personal histories. Old Tanglin halt is one of the many buildings with such significance. In a video produced by ObjectifsFilmsSG, interviewees expressed what Old Tanglin Halt means to them and what they feel about the en bloc. While many are going with the en bloc, they express their sadness in having the estate demolished and how it was significant in forging their own memories and personal histories.  For a citizen to have a sense of belonging to their country, they most importantly must feel that they belong. These buildings are a huge part of their lives and demolishing them means taking away the parts of Singapore, for which they can identify and connect with. Without this sense of connection and identity, how can one have a sense of belonging to Singapore. There needs to be some continuity and familiar places for Singaporeans to identify with and to call this place home, and traditional buildings serve this exact purpose. 

3. National Identity (physical manifestation of historical sites) 
- education (students able to visit these sites, therefore greater connection to national historical sites due to being able to see them physically)

In addition, traditional buildings play a critical role in our future as they provide a platform to educate younger generations about our country’s history and our national roots. As Singaporeans take a trip down memory lane, they can reminisce and reflect upon how far Singapore has developed from the past. As they visit these traditional buildings, they are reminded of Singapore’s progress as a nation and can take the opportunity to soak in the atmosphere, evoking in them waves of intangible emotions, which cannot be experienced elsewhere. This will in turn inculcate a sense of national pride in the generation after, strengthening social cohesion in the community and motivating them to wish to defend our country. Take the Old Ford Factory, and Bukit Chandu in Singapore as examples, of which schools organise educational learning journeys to these places to allow students to gain greater understanding of the history of such places, building connection with them. 

4. Demand for traditional buildings by the citizens as properties, homes etc (thafiq, 
 - opposing point: can be demolished to build something that can generate more profits etc (more economic benefits)
- growing awareness amongst singaporeans that heritage helps in fostering a greater understanding
- businesses that want to make use of old buildings for their aesthetic and significance etc

However, there are those that would argue that the land used for these traditional buildings could be used for other facilities or buildings that can generate more profits and value. Instead of using the land for an outdated HDB block, the land could be repurposed to build new condominiums and offices. For example, Kallang Stadium was demolished to make way for a new Sports Hub that possesses state-of-the-art sporting infrastructure
and serves as a venue that can accommodate large-scale sports events
and concerts – a functional upgrade.
 To them, traditional buildings only hold Singapore back from further development and economic progress.

In reality, these traditional buildings could actually contribute to Singapore’s economy and development. In a 2019 study by ScienceDirect, it was found that there was a positive and significant relationship between conserving property and an increase in value for neighbouring properties. This shows how conservation buildings could actually be valuable amenities to Singapore as they can actually yield greater benefits for Singapore. Besides that, outdated and seemingly unusable properties can also be repurposed to give them new value and life. An example of this is the shophouses along Joo Chiat that were bought over by the local co--living company, Figment Live. The founder wanted to make use of the traditional aesthetic of the shophouses to make his properties stand out from the competition and he has received very positive results from doing so. As such, demolishing traditional buildings to make way for new developments is not the only way for Singapore to progress.
