         <description><![CDATA[<p>The President of the United States and the head of the union.  He was an abolitionist and wanted slavery to be abolished both for moral reason as well as preserving the unity across the country.  He made many attempts end slavery, such as the emancipation proclamation.  He then pushed towards ending slavery completely nation-wide, preserving the unity and begging reconstruction of the south. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Mary Todd Lincoln. </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Served as the first lady of the United States beside Lincoln.  She lost a son named Willie at the beginning of the war, she also had a young son named Tad, and an older son named Robert who was attending university for most of the war.  Later in the war Robert pleaded with his father (Lincoln) to allow him to serve, which he gave in despite the wishes of Mary Todd.  There was also a lot of tension created by the fact her family were slave owners, although she supported Lincoln in his efforts.v </p>]]></description>

Mary Todd refused to let him serve because she was terrified of losing another son to the war.  Though he did enlist towards the end of the war.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>He was a radical republican in the house of representatives during the time the 13th amendment was being decided on.  Although he was an abolitionist for years prior, and was very vocal of his opinions.  He had quite a few "one-liners" that shaped people's idea of the amendment and won the vote for the addition of the 13th. </p>]]></description>

He made crucial suggestions to Lincoln in the war that shaped the outcome for the Union.  His help in getting resources to the western union army was crucial to the union's victory. </p>]]></description>

His position was that if the bill were to pass, the 4 million freed African Americans would cause chaos, and that a more thorough plan must be created.  Though, he changed his position and provided a crucial vote in the passing of the 13th amendment. </p>]]></description>
