Important ideas I want to cover, especially with what is happening currently would be topics such as political propaganda, election processes, as well as the foundation of what America was built on. I feel these topics are so relevant always and just basics we need to know as citizens. Knowing our foundations, when they are taught to the core as much as possible, opens up a world of discovery and "ahhh" moments when studying American History. It also helps understand important moments to come such as elections. I also would love to focus on social rights / justice movements as they play a huge part in politics today.

I would love to explore the ideas of biodiversity and environmental change that is happening in the world around us. Discussing what factors and events effect different ecosystems is important for young people to understand. Understanding biodiversity can help to engage students within their own ecosystems
in order to better take care of it for future generations.

A topic that I would like to cover in my unit is literature from the 21st century. Specific formative and summative assignments will be focused on speaking and listening ELA standards. I am looking to center the unit specifically on the novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. It is a unit that I will be teaching second semester of student teaching, and I believe creating this unit now will give me a jumpstart into full time student teaching next semester. This novel will open the doorway for discourse and debate in the classroom, a necessary skill in the real world and in post-secondary school.

I'm thinking about doing a unit based on evolution. The idea being using Missouri learning standard 6-8.LS1.B.1. which is "Construct an explanation for how characteristic animal behaviors as well as specialized plant structures affect the probability of successful reproduction of animals and plants respectively." This alongside standard 6-8.LS1.B.2. "Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how
environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of
organisms." would be some great standards to base a curriculum unit on. This alongside writing breaks will help students understand how organisms change over time and adapt to better survive in their environment.

However, as I plan to be a teacher in Missouri, I want to avoid using the examples in textbooks as they often are not accessible to students who aren’t regularly coming into contact with the landscapes and animals being described. I plan instead to use Missouri’s Natural Communities in the lectures and assignments as local examples of these systems and concepts that are required content in the ecology units in Freshman Biology courses. I would also plan an integrated field trip to a local natural area or park to do an experiment or project that measures these factors.
