This article summarized a study of a survey issued to anti-vaxxers that tested their self perceived knowledge about certain things in combination with an actual test of their knowledge on certain subject areas. The study claims that anti-vaxxers (by in large) suffer from an issue known as "meta-ignorance." Also known as "ignorance of your ignorance." I found this article especially funny; especially since in a prior discussion for this class, I (satirically) formed an argument that opposed vaccinations.

The civil war in South Sudan reached a cease-fire agreement on Saturday but was violated just hours after it was signed. This was a glimmer of hope in a dire situation where many of the poorest citizens are facing famine, disease, and economic disparity. The hope is that the cease-fire will be a message that humanitarian assistance will not be interrupted to these individuals as they are most susceptible to changes in their environment.

TED Talk host, Guy Winch questions, “why don’t we see a health professional when we feel emotional pain: guilt, loss, loneliness?” Winch identifies the need in practicing, “emotional hygiene” by taking our emotional pain as serious as physical pain. He continues to note the importance to take the time to check in with one’s self and to be more aware of our emotional state.

What happens inside the brain of a gambling addict when they make a bet - and can the secret to their addiction be found within the brain itself? BBC Panorama filmed a unique experiment designed to find out. Wendy Bendel's partner killed himself after struggling with a 20-year gambling addiction. In a confession he wrote for Wendy he singled out the high-stakes, high-frequency fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) found in bookmakers across the UK. These machines offer gamblers a choice of games, and combine potentially high stakes with the chance of a win every 20 seconds.

This article notes the implications of Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the Paris agreement. In addition to not helping a united global front on reducing carbon emissions, the decision means that the Paris agreement will be underfunded as the US had agreed to provide money for poor countries in need of climate assistance. Without the US contribution (about a third of overall funding) , the program is scrambling to financially back it's promises.

July 13
Race/class/gender/society
I have already posted this week but I came across his article and wanted to share it. This article titled “what if the government gave everyone a paycheck?” Was published in the New York Times this week. It looks into the idea of universal income and the impact it would have on poverty. In the US a basic income of $1000 monthly would eliminate poverty in the country for over 41 MILLION Americans.
