How does S. E. Hinton develop the theme through setting, characters, and plot over the course of the text?

She develops the theme, friendship by explaining how the gang of greasers stick together no matter where they are, on the run or at home. She shows the characters as selfless and naive, risking their lives for each other. They aren't afraid to back their gang up when they're in fights with the Socs. It shows how effective trust is , because during hard times friends look to one another for moral support, wanting to know the right thing to do. During that time the gang was there for Ponyboy and Johnny the most trying to lift each other up in time of chaos. "I never thought I'd live to see the day when I would be so glad to see Dally Winston, but right then he meant one thing: contact with the outside world." (80) Even though they have almost no power since they are minors, when they stick together they can achieve success proving how powerful a team can be. Working hard to prove their worthiness. This causes a chain reaction making the plot more suspenseful, the reader wants to know how far these kids will go for one another.

The next event is when Johnny went after Ponyboy when he went to save the kids in the church. He couldn't leave Ponyboy alone, he had to help if he could. When things got really dangerous he was the one willing to take the fall. Since Ponyboy is giving up his real family, school, safety for Johnny. He feels like the least he could do is to be brave, even when he knows he could get hurt. Since he knows Ponyboy is special, can go on to do big things. "We dropped the last of the kids out as the front of the church started to crumble. Johnny shoved me toward the window. "Get out!" (93) Since Ponyboy was the one to react so quick, running in the church without hesitation, Johnny couldn't let himself see a hero, his friend die. When Dally went in to save Johnny it showed how far dally will go to save his friend (when usually he's careless about other people, "Forget those blasted kids!"(93)), inside a burning church. This will effect the plot since the boys got hurt physically because of showing heroism for one another.

Furthermore another example is when Ponyboy understands the phrase "things are rough all over" (117). He shows his sympathy and opens up to Randy and Cherry about social problems. He understands that it doesn't matter who you are there can still be good in people. This effects the plot and characters since later in the story Ponyboy won't be as harsh towards the Socs. Since he knows they have problems too, just like how greasers act too violent; when Socs act superior. He doesn't mind seeing their points of views, he develops his friendship with them when he understands how Randy feels about escaping when the rumble is going on. He feels the same way about inequality so he feels empathy for him, not wanting him to run away to a new setting."He ain 't a Soc," I said, "He's just a guy. He just wanted to talk."(118) That's why when Cherry is staying he feels grateful that a soc understanding him watching the sunsets, will be in the same setting as him. In same town even though they're separated by social class.

The last event is when Johnny is dying but still believes in his strong relationship with Ponyboy. Since the book Johnny connected with the most was Gone With The Wind he wanted Ponyboy to live his best life. Seeing and experiencing the things Johnny never could see because of his death. Reality is that good things don't always last but since Johnny knows the potential of Ponyboy he wants him to stay successful. Showing the impact of how much these two boys look out for eachother, even when Johnny is dying. Ponyboy coming to the hospital when he was very hurt from the rumble shows how anxious he is to see Johnny and to cheer him up as a friend. Going to the hospital right before Johnny dies is a noble thing to do, and Johnny's words "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold..."(148) effects the plot and characters because Ponyboy's friendship with Johnny has been the most impacted, causing him to remember this moment. Trying to achieve Johnny's wishes by seeing the world in a better perspective. Basically he's acting like this picture of a sunset, looking at things from a new, unique angle.
