The World War began due to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife on June 28,1914. Gavrilo Princip who was from Bosnia and Herzegovina killed both while they visited Bosnia and Herzegovina. Princip was part of a society called the Black Hand. The reason why Princip killed Archduke was because he wanted to destroy the Austro-Hungarian rule in the Balkans and wanted to unite the South Slav people.

1945 The End of World War II

World War II ended on September 2, 1945 which is known as V-J Day. V-J Day means Victory over Japan Day. World War II ended when Japan stopped fighting and signed the surrender document on the deck of the battleship USS Missouri. President Harry S. Truman was the person who announced the surrender of Japan in the war from the White House.

1938 Kristallnacht

From November 9, 1938 to November 10, 1938 Kristallnacht or The Night of Broken Glass occurred. Kristallnacht is called The Night of Broken Glass because of all the broken glass that was on the streets after all the destruction. German Nazi's attacked Jewish people and their property. Kristallnacht was caused by the assassination of the German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grynszpan who was a 17-year old Polish Jew.

1929 The Start of the Great Depression

The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in U.S. History, it started due to the Stock Market Crash in October of 1929. The reasons the stock market crashed was because of overinflated shares, growing bank loans, panic selling, and higher interest rates. During the Great Depression many factories were shut down, homes were lost because people couldn't pay their mortgage, people went hungry, and unemployment increased dramatically.

1917 The United States joins World War I

The United States joined World War 1 because Germany's U-boats had sank many of the United States' merchant ships. Another reason they joined the war was because Germany was trying to get Mexico in an alliance that would go against the United States. Arthur Zimmerman was the German Foreign Secretary and he was the one that sent a coded telegram that was offering United States territory to Mexico if they helped the Germans. The British intercepted the telegram and the decrypted it as well.

1941 The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor

The United States passed sanctions against Japan, which included trade embargoes on oil and scrap metal. The United States hoped that this would lead Japan to stop wanting to obtain more territory. But, that did not happen, and on December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. The purpose of the attack was so that Japan could take places in the Pacific and Southeast Asia, so they could get the resources they needed without U.S. interference. The attack on pearl harbor caused the United States to enter World War II.
