Very excited for this talk! Hoping to hear about breeding perennial crops for quantitative traits like durable disease resistance. I work a lot with apples, where much of contemporary breeding seems to be focused on major genes (i.e. the vF gene) for disease resistance, which I (as a layperson in the field of genetics!) see as inadequate for the long term.

George Hanhauser asked about Organic certification with permaculture systems (ie, not rotated crops per se). I'm organic certified and permaculture. My certifier guy just asks how I'm taking care of soil fertility (compost, mulch, cover crops) and wants to see records of what I've planted where (I have a notebook, seed packets, receipts). I do have a lot of annuals which fits his model, but he doesn't care how many kinds of plants are in a bed,or if they're mixed with annuals, just that I have a record of tracking so I make sure to mix up kinds of crops/families over time. -Kelda Lorax, Stardust Market Garden in NE Oklahoma

Hello, I planted Kernza before I did soil test and the test says the soil is at pH 5.5. I know this is at the lowest end of pH range for Kernza. I am planning to add lime to raise pH. Any recomendation of timing and method of incorporating lime without hurting the newly planted Kernza?

The elderberry talk is really resourceful and interesting. I have an elderberry 'Mexican Blue?' variety at my garden and it's not doing so well. Not very productive and prone to lots of diseases. I'm excited to explore more variety and find the one that suit the location well. at 10b zone. Thank You!

I established a trial plot with Pawpaw as tree crop and Kernza as the row crop in Northampton MA in a 10 year flood zone of Mill river to see if a 100% perennial agroforestry is possible. Complementary above and below ground growth habit might reduce competition but we are 5 years from seeing that. Interesting to note that New Roots Integration Institute is looking at Pecan's as a companion tree crop for Kernza.

What are your goals? Local food security, habitat rehabilitation, increasing biodiversity, conservation of natural resources, and spreading plant resources are important to me. In my context the scale I’m working towards is tending enough animals, fruits, nuts, and berries for multiple families. Then encouraging others to do the same. In my context the land is very hilly and ill suited for row crops, but perfect for agroforestry and silvopasture systems. Harvest is meant to be celebrated, so encourage customers/owners to enjoy it.
-Tim C

When you consider crop plants to be relations, it suddenly feels very wrong to talk about “elite” cultivars and use other eugenics-like language surrounding superiority and inferiority. More than an issue of political correctness, I think that kind of language potentially leads us in very concrete, dangerous directions -- inbreeding, reduction of diversity and adaptability, ignorance of valuable genetics in landraces and crop wild relatives, etc. I'm curious if anyone else feels similarly or has any ideas regarding useful changes to the language we use when breeding plants.

I'm curious if there are any examples of shared community processing equipment? Seems like there's such a huge potential to really ramp up US elderberry production to meet that current demand. I wonder if that would be accelerated if there were more opportunities for shared equipment. Is there space in the recent increase of conservation funding to set up processing facilities? Or maybe they already exist somewhere?

We are interested in 'Domesticating Indigenous fruit trees for poverty reduction'. We are the Specialty Crops program at Lincoln University which is a HBCU land grant university. We are actively growing native crops for food security. One of them are Prunus americana, which we think may be a different species. It may be that its genetic diversity is extreme.
