The full grown adult Leatherback can weigh up to 916kg.
The clawless flippers can be as Long as 270cm
Leatherbacks are known to be the world's fastest reptiles and deepest divers. Scientists have found that they can dive to depths deeper than 1,200m and swim at a speed of 9.8 m/s.
During a single breeding season, each female may lay up to 900 eggs.
Although the females lay a large number of eggs, few hatchlings make it to the sea. Many eggs and hatchling become food for other animals such as birds and fish.
Sometimes, people collect the eggs to sell in markets. That is why this species has become very rare especially in waters off Malaysia.
Leatherbacks are found in the ocean and they are often seen near coral reefs. This is because their Favourite meals are jellyfish, octopus and squid, are commonly found in these areas. Male leatherbacks stay in the water all their lives while the females leave the sea almost yearly to lay their eggs on beaches. Mating between male and female turtles happened out at sea.
