From Exotic to Invisible: Asian American Womens' Experiences of Discrimination

We see more and more Asian hate around the world nowadays. What started us off was when the pandemic hit and our world was shutting down, many people started to blame Asian people for starting it. Which we know that race has nothing to do with the pandemic. The results showed that stereotypes of Asian American women are alive and well in the current social context of America. These stereotypes contribute to experiences of marginalization, invisibility, and oppression that these participants have faced in the past and continue to face today.

These results support other research findings that Asian American women face both subtle and blatant discrimination in their personal relationships and their professional lives, from bosses, professors, colleagues, subordinates, partners, family, and friends.

Many cosmetology schools do not teach textured hair styles, cutting, and shaping. Many people believe this should be taught in schools because everyone is allowed to walk into a hair salon and expect the best services a hairstylist can give.

Many hairstylists are not required to learn how to style, cut, and color Black hair in school—resulting in racial segregation at salons across this country. The writer of this story is a director at one such segregated salon and is still employed, so we chose to keep her identity and that of the salon private for her personal protection. Her experience is not uncommon, though, so we urge you to ask your salon about its policies and demand that it ensures hair equality by hiring those equipped with the knowledge of working with Black hair.

There’s a huge divide between the diversity and skill sets available in salons, which results in different hair types going to different salons. Black hairdressers typically have the skillset to cater to all hair types, whereas white hairdressers don’t learn how to work with afro hair. Predominantly white salons should be able to provide hair services to all people, regardless of race.

More specifically, the makeup side of the beauty industry does not create an inclusive environment. It is common knowledge that when companies release new foundation and concealer lines, they are released in a variety of skin colors ranging from a very fair white color, to a very deep dark color. Although there are color options for African Americans to use, most makeup shade ranges favor people with lighter skin

"Many stylists avoid servicing clientele with extremely curly or coily hair due to a lack of understanding. But as the demographics of our country change, all stylists need to be equipped for a wider range of textures. The makeup of our families are changing and it's our responsibility to be able to service anyone who sits in our chair," says Taylor. The cosmetology education system hasn't evolved quick enough to keep up with the times. Typically, the only information we get about highly textured hair is a brief overview of relaxers, which people aren't wearing as much as they used to. Textured hair—especially African-American hair—is often viewed as intimidating, which is mainly due to a lack of information and hands-on practice.
