My Reflection on Practicing the 1.2 Competency Standard

I think an inportant aspect of working with Ukrainian refugees is understanding how past experiences can actually shape what they actually need in terms of their care.I realised that many arrive with war related trauma like family separation or being attacked which can affect both their physical and mental health. This is relevant for my nursing practice because it showed me why l need to approach assessments with patience, empathy, and trauma informed care. I now feel more aware that assesments like taking vital signs or performing other physical assessments may trigger anxiety or distress. I think l have developed skills in actively listening and validating patient experiences, and I learned to observe non verbal cues that indicate discomfort or fear. To me this is important in the workplace because providing care without acknowledging these experiences could reduce trust. I will now need to adapt my approac ensuring all my care is culturally safe patient-centered and sensitive to trauma. (Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice, 2019).
