Watson's theory is a middle range theory that was developed between 1975 and 1979. The theory focuses on mindfulness as a way of caring. Watson's theory is based off of the trans-personal relationship between the patient and the caregiver, and how the two can both care and help heal one another. The concept of the Human Caring Theory is that the relationship between the nurse and patient should be therapeutic and healing for both, making it where the nurse is caring fully, and the patient's is involved and holistic needs are being met.

This theory can be applied in most nursing settings. Some areas of nursing where Watson's theory can be used most is in critical care, long term care, and end of life care. This theory is important in theses areas, because this type of nursing is really draining on the nurse mentally and emotionally. It is important for the nurse to practice mindfulness and holistic care in order to give the best care and to have a therapeutic relationship.
