I am going to bring beschuit met muisjes. Depending on whether it is a boy or a girl. Blue or pink topping is used to give to guests/friends/family or colleagues when there is a new born .

If the newborn has older, school-going siblings, they often bring the treat with them to school to serve to their teacher and classmates.

Beschuit is a round, hard and dry biscuit or rusk (also known as Dutch crispbakes) that's about a centimetre thick and made from twice-baked bread.

The top of the biscuit is covered in a layer of butter, which also serves to keep the Muisjes® from falling off. Muisjes®, which means mice, are seeds from the anise plant (aniseed) covered in a sugary coating.

When do Dutch eat beschuit met Muisjes®?

It is not entirely clear where the name comes from. Some think that it’s because the aniseeds have a little tail which makes them look like tiny little mice.

Others believe that it is a reference to the fertile nature of the small rodent, something Amsterdammers will be all too familiar with.

Typically, pink and white Muisjes® are served when a girl is born, and blue and white when a boy is born. This is a fairly recent development, however, as the blue kind were not introduced until 1994. Before then white Muisjes® were served for the birth of boy. The pink ones have been in use since 1860.

Beschuit met Muisjes® originates from the Zaanstreek (Zaan region). While celebrating the birth of a child by serving something sweet is an old tradition, it is unknown exactly when the anise-based treat was adopted.

Lithuanian dishes are heavily reliant upon root vegetables (potatoes and beetroot), meat and dairy products, which can all be grown in Lithuania’s cold climate. Filling, hearty and meant to keep you warm from the inside. Lithuanian food is certainly something worth trying.

I am going to bring a Lithuanian tree cake called Šakotis (called "spiked" or "branched"), in German “baumkuchen“, which is a traditional Lithuanian cake that is frequently served during special occasions such as weddings, Christmas and Easter. This cake is a large, hollow ring with what looks like horns or spikes around the edges that are created from dripping batter as the cake is turned around and around on a spit-like cooker.

One of the oldest and most fundamental Lithuanian food products was and is black rye bread. Rye bread is eaten in almost every family for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bread is shown great respect, is called holy and is referred to in the feminine gender. If a piece of bread falls accidentally to the ground, it is picked up with reverence, kissed and eaten. This is done so that the home would never be without bread. In our family, bread is valued and respected as well. I remember as a child when a piece of bread used to fall on the ground, my grandfather would always tell me to pick up, kiss and eat it. Sometimes, I love to bake bread myself and to taste it with butter or honey. The main ingredients of bread are: rye flour, yeast or leaven, salt, sugar, caraway seeds and warm water.

I would have wanted to bring some reindeer meat but I was not able to catch one and I guess the meat would have been overdone by the time I get to Guadeloupe.

These small, fluffy pancakes you eat for lunch or as a snack. Poffertjes are served with a lump of butter and then covered in powder sugar. The best poffertjes are made fresh at an outdoor stand.

The food I’m going to share with you comes from an animal which is extremely popular in my birth place, the south west region of Spain, and this is “el cerdo Ibérico”, the Iberian pig. Its popularity derives from the fact that a high percentage of the economy of the area is related in one way or another to it. In Andalusia we eat all the parts of the animal, being the ham the most appreciated one. We can have some “chorizo y jamón ibérico” like we usually do in the south, as a snack before lunch, with some “picos” or “regañás” (breadsticks) and a cold drink (I see that will come from the Guadalupan side). For generations, this has been the best excuse to share a moment with family and friends, have a chat, some laughs and relax! I hope you like it!
