Borcsa-What are some characteristics of average members of society?

Basic questions

1. Who is an average member of society?

An average member of society is a person who is not having significant financial problems that would deprive them of fundamental resources, such as food, water, or a permanent residence. They also don’t have any physical or mental disabilities, and usually work or attend an educational institution.

2. Why don't these people usually not have motivation to do exercise?

The average person usually views exercise as important, however is not motivated to actually do some themselves. There are various reasons why this happens:

a. They think they are too busy to get exercise. Many people who work 9-5 day jobs often give the excuse “that I don’t have enough time to go to the gym”.

b. One doesn’t see the consequences of not getting enough exercise until it’s too late. Since most diseases that occur because of a lack of exercise (and also usually in correlation with the lack of a proper diet) don’t show many signs until later in one’s life, many don’t get exercise because it doesn’t have instant negative outcomes. Many early signs, such as being obese, appear early, however the diseases that often end a person’s life, such as diabetes or heart disease, don’t show up until much later – these diseases are very hard to reverse, and many also often don’t get checked until it’s too late to stop it.

3. What can be done to increase their motivation?

Motivation towards exercise can be increased in a variety of ways:

a. Having a reward system, where one tells themselves that if they do something (e.g. go on a 30 minute run for five days), they will reward themselves with something (e.g. a new book they have wanted for a while). It is better if these rewards are likewise “healthy” (e.g. not something like “if I go for a 30 minute run, I will order McDonald's for dinner”, because that takes away what the person has just achieved).

b. Having friendly competition can likewise increase motivation. As humans, always want to be better than the others, going to the gym with a friend and trying to beat their time at a particular machine.

Having just a friend who comes along with you may also be good motivation – this time, it being that you get to spend time with that person.

How can we promote physical health for the average member of society?

You might ask yourself, how can we promote physical health to people? Is it even possible? Well the answer is yes. There are many ways to do it. We have to, if not people are going to end up having the problems that my friends address. Actually many people have already started to have these disease so we need to work as fast as we can. One of the many ways you can do it is by using the social media. These days social media have had major impacts on people in many different ways, why don’t we use social media to become physically healthy. There are already helping people to be more physically active, there are celebrities who have healthy body, and on their pages they post their workouts and what they eat so people get inspired to do them. One of the reasons people eat unhealthy and fast food, food is because they are cheaper than the healthy food that restaurant sell. There a lot of fast food shops that sell fatty, high carb and high sodium food and almost all of them are very cheap, or at least cheaper than the healthy restaurants. In order to get more people to eat healthy from all different budget situation, we need to first have more healthy restaurant then we have to have cheaper healthy food. For example a BIG mac burger is 6$ where as a bowl of medium salad is 11$. So there is a big gap where makes people eat unhealthy food.

How does the app that ExerSonic have developed work?

I introduce you to ExerSonic. Our idea is to place different health machines commonly found in gyms around the city in rooms. As you enter the room, you scan a card (similar to how you would scan a myki in the train station), to make the room safe and secure. Each machine has a slot in which you can insert your card, and it stays in as long as it senses that you are exercising. Once you finish exercising, and have not used it in at least two minutes, you can stop the machine and the card automatically comes out of the slot, and you can take it. This way, it makes it impossible for a person to bypass to get awards without doing the requires exercise. This is Immediately after you have finished exercising, a virtual points will be transferred to your account, which you can access on an app connected to the whole program. For every hour you work out you are going to get 10 points, for example for a boost juice you need to have 10 points, so 1 hour. With the points you get form exercising, you can choose what coupons you want to get. You need to have a certain amount of points to get different things. The rewards will include things like $20 to spend at H&M, free Boost juices, a free pair of shoes from Nike and many more. They each need different amount of points, so you might have to exercise for 2 weeks to get Nike shoes but only 1 day of exercise for a boost juice. There are many options to choose from and all of them are the sponsors of the business. In order for the sponsors to not lose money, we are going to have ads on the app, so when you open the app there is going to be a short video. If people want have add-free app they can pay $15. There will be some limited edition stock in the app that people can buy from there.

The way you would use this is by going into the store you have the coupons of, and show them the coupon when you want to use it.

How will the ExerSonic help people?

One of the things that we have aimed for is to make people exercise and have fun is to motivate them to want to exercise. We want people to both have fun and be happy when they exercise. We don’t want people to be forced or to be told to exercise because they will be less likely to exercise. We know that people would save money to buy a dress but they are less likely to spend time to exercise just so they can be healthy. Therefore, we thought that we could connect these two together so people can exercise and enjoy it. Now people can hit two birds with one stone, because they both work to be healthy and they get what they want.
