Personal Music and Spirit Intersection

I best feel spiritually connected through music during my personal times of worship- wether that be at church on Sunday morning, in my dorm in the middle of the week, or driving down the high way. I believe music is a great way to help an individual form a connection with their time to their higher being; in my life that is God- the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The feeling is hard to explain to someone who has not experienced it. It is as if you are taking a breath of fresh air when you truly feel connected. Some will call it fake or crazy even, but I believe, through experiences, that it is possible to have such a connection. Majority of the time, listening to worship music (i.e. praise, gospel, rap, pop) allows for me to close of distractions and focus on the spiritual connection. Not all music allows for such strong relationship but personally warm, heartfelt music allows for the intersection between music and spirituality to be most powerful for me. The reading from the modules enhance my understanding on the history of the music I listen to along with the intended intentions of the music. I find it interesting how the Georgian chant evolved and led to such great work today. Like wise, I find Sacred Harp Singing interesting in itself. Honestly, I've often found both quite boring seeing as they did not truly allow me to experience the connection that I am able to receive today. I have provided videos of some of my favorite worship songs, which are significantly different than that of the ones we studied. I do not think anything is wrong or bad about those type of music, I just simply do not enjoy them as much as others do. Some people have this preconceived idea in their mind that all religious music is like that: slow and not entertaining; many fail to realize the great depths of value that comes from music when it intersects with spirituality.

Modern Day Praise Music

This is an example of the type of music I enjoy listening to in my everyday life that gives me a better feeling and connection seeing as it is a Christian song. It is simple songs like this, that does not song extensively gospel or drawn out, that I enjoy listening to whilst doing every day activities such as getting dressed in the morning or cleaning my room. I feel that you feed your mind. Though I do listen to pop and rap music, it is important to feed yourself things that will benefit you- in my case, my religion. Though it may happen subconsciously, it does not hurt to bring positivity and good vibes into your life.

This song is probably my favorite song that I feel truly builds a connection with music and spirituality. This song is definitely different from the types of music we've studied. This song is a pure example of how the music has transformed but steadily serves the purpose of connecting individuals to God. Not only the song just a great song to listen to due to the singers voice and bands skills, the message behind it is beautiful- enhancing the performance. It is music like this that most strongly makes me feel connected to the higher being.

I use this image of the Dunkin' Donuts logo to represent the change over time. Like Dunkin' Donuts, they have developed over time. This is similar to worship music. For example, it began as Georgian Chant but has changed into something that sounds nothing similar, as does these logos. Most importantly, the two comparisons relate most in the sense that just because they have changed over time does not mean that they have lost their value. Dunkin' Donuts are still delicious; just like worship music still served the purpose of building a bridge between music and spirituality!

According to the reading, Sacred Harp singing is known to be a way that, "brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems."
In relation to the topic, the benefit of having communities come together strengthens the connection one feels seeing as the presence of Jesus is there when three or more people come together in His name- this does not imply that it impossible to witness His presence alone or with only one other, only that it is definite when a body joins. Sacred harp singing is an example of how this is done.

According to the video from the module, "...Georgian chant brought about the first widely-used system of music notation in the west, and the ramifications of that ended up being huge."
If it had not been for this, there is no telling where music would be today.

According to a video form the module, it is said that, "Now you might be tempted to think Gregorian Chant is too old, too religious, or too exotic sounding to be important but you couldn't be more wrong. Gregorian chant is the stepping stone where Western music really began to take off." Like myself, it is often assumed that this music isn't necessarily entertaining, but the importance of it is astonishing.
