The Mystery and Melancholy of a Street___Giorgio de Chirico (1914)

Location: Private Collection
Materials: oil painting on canvas

The artwork feels mysterious and sorrow at the same time with the use of contrast between the darker colors in the front part with the darkened building and the horse-box, and the warmer tones that seems to be illustrating sunlight. The darker parts, the two shadows and the many open doors create a mysterious feeling as it seems to convey that the street is full of possibilities.

The artist made this artwork abstract by using different geometric shapes like the arches and circles to project emotions and a feeling of uncertainty, but the objects themselves don't really have an evident meaning.

Materials: Oil paining on canvas

I think this artwork feels refreshing as it consists of nature and greenery. At the same time, it also makes me wonder what the meaning behind this artwork is and I think the artist is trying to convey that whatever drawn on the canvas is the artist's representation of the reality of the view on the canvas, and it's about reality and perception.

The artist made this artwork abstract because it gives the audience a sense of discomfort with the canvas blending in with the view outside of the window.

Materials: Oil painting on canvas

This artwork makes me feel discomfort as this is surreal objects like the clocks melting which is far from reality, but the way it is portrayed is still very surreal.

The artist made this artwork abstract by using various shapes, like the three clocks melting in different places, from far and close, or the brown counter/table creates a contrast of solidity and "melty" with the melting clock on top.

Materials: Oil painting on canvas

This artwork makes me feel confused with the extremely large apple in a small room. The contrast between the size of what we know in reality vs the one's being illustrated in the artwork caused this confusion.

The artist made this artwork abstract by using changing the proportion far away from reality, but still painting it in a surreal way. The apple is to symbolize the tension between the hidden and visible.
