The original Cinderella stories of Egypt (Rhodopis) and Norway (Katie Woodencloak) are different. The element that symbolized magic contrast, one is real magic and one is a coincidence, the "evil" characters are portrayed by different relationships, Norway has an evil stepmother and Egypt has the other servant girls, and the conflict is different. The difference between these stories will have you yelling "that's crazy!"

Within the Rodopis story, the element of magic was metaphorical, and more of a lucky coincidence. The prince wanted a sign of who to pick as his wife, this sign was when a hawk dropped Rodopis' shoe to the prince. Birds are very common in Egyptian culture, the hawk and other birds, have strong physical features, representing gods, and carry on religion into this Cinderella story.

In the Katie Woodencloak story, there was a magic bull, and the cloth it gave Katie, the bull guided her and talked to her, leading her to get a wooden cloak which helped her in the long run. The "magic" in these stories contrasts, furthering my claim of why the stories are different. The wooden cloak and bull are both things involved in Norwegian culture, both things they honor.

The Rhodopis story doesn't have your typical evil stepmother. In the story the evil relationship is with other servants. They were very mean to her because she looked different, and was from a different place. They had also prevented her from going to the pharaoh's party because they gave her a long list of chores. This also symbolizes social structure, throughout the story it mentions many different classes from the servants to the pharaoh.

In the Katie woodencloak story the evil character is her step mother, the stepmother would starve and beat the princess, because of jealousy, so when the king was gone she would do these things. The stepmother saw the bull and got mad, so she faked sick and said she needed to eat it. The bull was a acted as a symbol for the many meat cuisines in norway, it is very common to have different meats. This was an example of the difference between the stories, Katie had a evil stepmother and Rhodopis had "evil" other servants.

Within the Rhodopis story, the conflict was the fact that all the other servants gave her a very long list of chores to do, so she wouldn't be able to attend the pharaoh's party. She worked a lot and as she was working by the river a hawk stole her shoe and this led to the resolution. This story includes many geographical hints like the river.

Katie woodencloak, her conflict was that the stepmother was torturing her and she was going to kill the bull, later on in the story, after Katie runs away, she also faces challenges agains the prince because he is only judging her based off her looks when she is in her wooden cloak, but when she is in the kirtle he changes. The kirtle is an achievement because it was an important piece of clothing in the story and in life, to wear formally. The stories have very different conflicts, illustrated just by who the evil characters are and the prince is.
