End of Earth - Out of this world

As technologies advance, the boundaries of our physical space on earth are increasingly removed or pushed by our growing reach into outer space, digital space, metaphysical space and even dimensional space (maybe?). Never before have humans been able to "exist" on so many planes and platforms as extensive forms of ourselves.

"Delinearity" - End of extrapolation
The future is becoming less and less predictable. We are in the early stages in the history of humans where the possibilities of technologies will blur the barriers between science fiction and science fact, i.e. we can theoretically live beyond our natural lifecycle (death may no longer be the end). As current technological experiments begin to take shape or becomes clear, the more exponentially unknown our futures become.

Industries Transformation - End of tangibilty
Our age old obsession with physical resources like assets, buildings, objects would decrease in favour of more intangible resources like intellectual capital, data, energy, networks. Value may increasingly be transferred from the physical to the virtual, i.e. digital currency, metaphysical worlds and identities.

There are so many things we are 'used to' where it used to be. Observing the past 20 years, we seen things people wouldn't have been convinced will happen 40 years ago. Signals and waves observed today might be the bigger waves of the next 10-20 years. The prototype of today might be the next thing in years to come.

De-linearity is the one thing stuck on my mind now. We are living so structured based on constant things like age, gender, race, marriage and borders, etc. What if there was a day when we return to nomadic life where there are no more borders to restrict us from one country to another. We could be working and studying in a virtual space without the need to report to a physical place or institution. We might be able to collaborate better with trust because of no borders, race, and religions.

As we can expect a longer lifespan through genetic modification, what can we do with the extended lifespan, plus we might not be born to study, work and then retire. What will be the meaning of life then? I wonder if it will bring back an age of arts, philosophy and religion where people discuss the meaning of life and what our existence is meant to be. Or could it be a passionate pursuit of knowledge as we could learn and do more with virtual assistants.

Mobile-first will be a generation of the past. We might have augmented parts, wearable or integrated part of our bodies, enable us to interact quicker and better with machines. Our senses may be augmented to enable us to have AR vision and touch and smell things we see on the digital world. Our virtual assistant could be a brain computer interface, although that sounds creepy as we all heard stories about voices in the head. However creepy that sounds the virtual assistant could aid us in many ways possible. We might be able to talk to machines with a thought or gesture, commanding it to move and perform task telepathically... just like professor X.

Conclusion:
Much as I was excited over all the future scenarios imagined, I have fears too that are based on our history on earth. My fear comes with dark patterns of our history of exploitations. Space exploration may be the next thing as we have the capabilities to move across planets. Will humans harvest the best of other planets or use them as grounds for disposing toxic wastes just as we did to our planet?

The fact that humans possess cognitive bias and tend to think linearly. Hence, humans are not good at processing exponentially. As such, I find that it is always important to prepare for what might happen since humans are not able to extrapolate or predict and things can happen in a gradual and sudden manner (you will never know).

2. The introduction of the “Amara’s law” which touches on the point that humans tend to overestimate the impact of technology in the short run but underestimate the effect of it in the long run. On “overestimate”, it is explained that when there is a new technology introduced (i.e. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.), people tend to be excited as it appears effortlessly in solving an issue and did not perceive anything negative. On “underestimate”, it is when humans underestimate the adverse impact of technology. For instance, declining mental health of humans due to virtual meetings and remote jobs. With increased virtual meetings or when one starts a new job remotely, there will be less physical contact and less opportunities to build relationships. This eventually lead to increased stress.

3. The other takeaway is that data offers insights and is important to the future. When humans merged with data, it creates biodata and this is useful for profiling, research work, future strategy planning etc. As such, I find that it is important to understand data language, costs and nuances and also think about privacy issues, ethics and the possible risks due to hacking.

Imagine a world with the conversion between AI, 5G, IoT, sensors, Virtual and Mixed Reality. This fusion of technologies will allow people to live in this called “Artificial Reality”. How far is time travel in this context? The moment virtual experience becomes so perfect to the neural level, how could one be able to differentiate when they are in a simulation or not, depending on how the chemical industries could do. I love the concept of DEIP (Delocalised Experiential Immersive and Personalised.) to explain how this converged and fused experience is shaping towards.

This blurry boundary between spaces can be linked with the recent increase of level of anxiety within the young generation. For some it could feel like they don’t belong. It’s the inertia moment in life you don’t know what is real and what is not. And impacts mostly everything you do. Confusing times. It’s all so confusing nowadays. Parents know that shaking hands is not ok, but bumping elbows is.

Letting go of some of the legacy systems are crucial to ensure a sustainable reset in the industries, communities and the world. Levering in Liminality is certainly important. I am glad to be a student at this time to witness the change that is about to happen. Reminds me of when math teacher used to preach that we won’t have calculators with us all the time. What will education become when thinking can be augmented?

This brings me to the next point Roger talked about, falling off the edge of the playround. Children who are leaving primary school will leave to jobs that don’t exist yet. Reframing education around inadequacies. Measuring failure as an achievement to encourage imagination and challenge convention. I am super curious what great thinkers will emerge from these new schools of thought. This also makes me fear of becoming irrelevant. Will I be able to keep up with this exponential shift.

Science fiction accelerating to science fact. Life imitates art. That’s why I think we still need dreamers. I can’t wait to have my own C-3PO as a sidekick. Humans need to become Triple A: anticipatory, anti-fragile, adaptive agility, so that we can have hyper-augmentation relationship with machines and not be substituted. I can't help but worry about how I'll stay up as AI develops at an uncontrollable rate and has the capacity to improve itself again.

The idea is that technological progress and innovation are becoming increasingly non-linear, and difficult to predict how we will operate in the future. Organizations and individuals will need to be more flexible, inventive, and creative in order to adapt to new technologies and shifting conditions in a non-linear environment. I will need to keep focus on lifelong learning and ongoing self-improvement because there will always be a need to adapt to new technology and environmental situations.

The need for a Reset

It is inevitable that we will need to change our mindset on how AI machines have invaded our daily lives, industries and communities around the world. How can we ensure that we are not stepping on thin ice comprising ethical rights while technology resets our mindsets and disrupts our comfort methods of working and living to embrace liminality in our lives?

In conclusion, I have constantly reminded myself to be in a growth mindset. In every aspect of life, learn to be flexible and willing to adapt, learn, and stay relevant in this emerging technology-driven society.

In the digital world, data is becoming a "language" and until humans become increasingly fluent with this language, the future itself will seem cost-less. I feel like currently, the general level of literacy and understanding around data is very much lacking - as Roger suggests, the language of data should be taught at schools, the same way English is taught.

This was quite an uncomfortable concept for me, as someone who prefers to live in the physical realm. As the virtual and intangible expands, the answer to the question "what is real" is constantly evolving. For example, is your life in the metaverse or Second Life real?

I enjoyed learning about this concept. The lines between phases are blurring and transition spaces (the in-between) are growing and evolving. It is a good reminder to not be so quick to label things, as nothing is really binary, and instead try to see things for what they are.

Aspirations. - Roger clearly mentioned that the top 50 TikTok content creators have a combined population bigger than the UK, Canada, Mexico and Australia combined which to me that is really scary to see the future of our generations heavily relying on TikTok as the emerging trend and aspirations are truly demoralising. The need to educate the young to be less reliant on social media, and stop embracing gig economy. Learn to put down that phone, go out and live in the present.

Amara’s Law: “We tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run.”

I’m excited yet fearful at the same time, Black Mirror episodes come to mind (art imitates life, or the other way around?). While exciting and full of potential, the Amara’s law rings true. We might not realise it but one day we might just wake up in a dystopian world, after all our feeble minds simply can’t process the speed of exponential growth.

(2) Unintended consequences of geographic concentration (dependence on China, supply crisis)

This is a topic that is often brought up in my work, so I find it particularly interesting. There is a rising nationalist/populist sentiment globally, with increasing awareness that there is a dependence on China for critical resources. I am curious what this would mean in the future, previously globalisation was hot but now it’s not.

(3) The need for a reset

I still ponder about the phrase: “the system is not broken, it was built this way”. I discussed this with friends, and still come out confused. Whether it is broken or not, it requires change but is it better to change the system part by part (which seems insufficient), or hit the reset button (which seems rather extreme)?

Curious to find out what happens when technology and humans converge to become one entity. The speaker mentioned Ray Kurzweil, a well-known futurist, who predicted that by the 2030s, humans would be more non-biological than biological. It gave me a curious yet exciting feeling to know that one-day humans can become hybrids and probably even achieve immortality when our brains can be backup. This is also a rather scary thought to wonder what's left of us when multiple copies of our backup brains get transferred to new bodies or machines. What's our identity, or does that even matter in the future?

Grey Rhinos
It was an interesting concept from the consumer's viewpoint on data protection. I wonder who the ‘real’ rhino keepers are and what it would take for them to stop ignoring the obvious issues here. Multiple clashes of rhinos to create a black swan event?

Conventional Learning and AAA
Rewarding students for repeating the correct answers vs creative thinking and learning from failures. I think the future of technology and how it is rapidly changing the world suggests that humans need to become more "triple A" to cope with the changes. It is also to avoid getting replaced by machines or obsolete from the moment one takes his/her first step into the workplace after school. I feel uneasy about the ‘surveillance state’ of China that helped to advance its AI national competitiveness (vast quantity of data). The intention of surveillance systems depends on the people who build them. I am concerned about the digital authoritarianism of China that could be used as a means of repression and social control.

Liminality

The past is gone and future is yet to come in this less binary world. We are redefining a lot of things and sometimes the uncertainties feels a little overwhelming. The normal vs new normal post covid is the most relatable example of this liminality where we need to learn, unlearn and relearn of this rapid changing world.

Let's start with the big picture. Since the brief said to discuss how I was affected emotionally, I would just confess to being blown away by the thought of "beyond complexities". I had been quite content to grapple with complexities and ambiguities - in fact, I would even characterise myself as someone who thrives in negotiating the unknowns and embracing change. But the concept of things being so complex that it may be beyond our current understanding of complexities - which, to be honest, when applied using the cynefin framework, while already mind-blowing as it is, is still, nonetheless, putting a structure and framework to the ambiguities. What Roger Spitz posits ups the ante - we have to break out of even our current thinking and frameworks to go beyond complexity, beyond VUCA and BANI. With exponential change / developments, the convergence of emerging technologies, science fiction possibly becoming science fact, there is so much unpredictability and uncertainty, that we will just have to embrace not being able to make sense of everything within the signifiers, symbols and frames we have come to adopt and rely on.

I was also intrigued by his discourse on liminality. This is a much more elegant, sophisticated and higher order thinking of the cliche that I've been dishing to my kids and teams at work - "the only constant is change". To embrace liminality and leverage the transitions is almost like saying this is the pathway to nirvana in a disrupted and disrupting world. We can be released from the fear, suffering and anxiety of disruption, if we are able to exist in liminality and accept that what is to come will come, and we will be able to adapt and adopt as it comes. This felt almost spiritual to me, and yes, I love elegant, precise words, and "liminality" is one such word. Word.

Last but not least, on a more grounded level, I appreciated his pitch on the need for education to fully embrace and encourage ambiguity, uncertainty and complexity. One of my biggest bugbears is that our education systems are not keeping pace with the exponential disruptions happening all around us. We are still expecting our kids to remember and regurgitate, instead of teaching them to question, challenge, break things, and build them again. The word "failure" should not even exist in education. Grades are meaningless when no educator can give you the correct, model answer to what the world will look like when you leave school. To all the teachers on this programme and out there - it is time to shake things up and break the system.

Last but not least (and this is not one of the three key takeaways), I was intrigued by the term Roger Spitz coined for his platform - "Techistential". Tech as existential. That about sums it up.

3) Automation of everything
The statement by Roger, “Everything that can be automated, everything that can be disintermediated, will be”, really piqued my interest and curiosity and got me to think about work automation thanks to AI. This technology will undoubtedly change our job tasks, remove loads of existing positions and require us to somehow up-skill ourself in the coming years. I’m super stoked with this module while working on this pre-work. The word "Futurist" intrigued me. I’m often thought that I was conflicted with being hi-tech and lo-fi. It is then up to us to have the discernment for what’s real and what’s not. Transitions are often uncomfortable, but it's through the discomfort that we progress.
Radical Transparency & Traceability. It forces companies to look at their purpose and authenticity, to have transparency in their clean supply chain. This trend is a positive upscale as we do see brands being called out for green and social washing.
Reset / Re:birth / Re:imagine, letting go of some of the legacy that is no longer relevant, be it in our organisation, our homes, our country, our education systems. Eventually, they can create their supply chain and be independent of this technology. Roger mentions Radical Transparency, even though he did not connect this topic to China. Still, I wonder how important the role of transparency for social impact will be for China to win this war.

Hyper Augmentation

This will augment human intelligence cognitive computing, for example, autonomous intelligence finding insightful data by pattern recognitions as synergetic for humans. However, Roger gives a few examples of hyper augmentation, like Erica, the AI actor and AI robot lawyer. While technology can be a cause of aversion, it also provides people equal access to data at the same time. This reminds me of how the public is mocking Meta's VR implementation. We might need a different perspective on public literacy to understand these transitions.

Personally, the most impactful part was this.
Preferred Futures. Aspirations.

The success of Tik Tok, one of the most valuable unicorns, makes us wonder whether we're on the right path to mastering complexity and disruption. Roger suggested reframing our education to encourage imagination, embrace ambiguity, reset some legacy, and understand social inequalities and climate to integrate into our system. This part was powerful regarding the importance of being mindful and proactive about the role of technology in our lives and digital future.

The linear way has always been human's comfort space because it is efficient, help makes sense, and gauges when processing information, patterns, and behaviours. From the start of education to the adult phase, there has always been a distinctive linear path people would take, specialised or identify. But a non-linear path and a liminality lens allow for greater flexibility and adaptability in solving and deciding in a complex scenario. Non-linear thinking will enable individuals to break away from rigidness, consider multiple perspectives, and foster creativity rather than relying solely on established patterns and procedures. It also allows humans to recognise patterns and make connections that may not be presently obvious. This ability to think and learn in a non-linear manner is what will enable humans to innovate and evolve with skills and critical thinking alongside machines and AI.

The meaning of a 'free future.'

The term free is multifaceted and complex. With emerging technology that can either increase freedom, liberate poverty and empower everyone with equal rights and play, that same freedom can potentially limit and undermine security and privacy. So is a narrative equally important when embarking on such implementation as what P Venkatesh mentioned 'from whose point of view' are we building this for? Whose future is this free for? Every freedom obtained is fought and sacrificed in some way or another. Roger shared in his video that he believes that data literacy should be taught like any other language. The future will always involve data, and data, for the most part, will never be completely free. Thus, having literacy on what it means will give people greater insights, knowledge, and new professional skills.

Fall off the edge of the playground.

Roger shared that it is essential to reframe education and inadequacies. That is not just applicable to schools but also to organisations. For example, the way we have always perceived failure has always been what's wrong or right, thus limiting what we can and dare to imagine, innovate, and create. However, when we start fostering and inculcating into people a landscape where there is no apology for failure, but through iterations, new ideas are born. Therefore, humans, in general, should be encouraged to imagine, iterate, adapt, and navigate. While it definitely would mean getting out of your comfort zone and being comfortable with uncertainty, as Roger mentioned, this way forward into the future, if not carefully managed, will 'create leaders who can't lead.'

Encourage Ambiguity, Uncertainty, and Complexity

While my above statement reflects my idealism about the future, this one amplifies my parental anxiety. How can we prepare - or protect - our children from a future that we can scarcely imagine much less understand - and what will the future of jobs truly be like? Will they be part of a sandwich generation that becomes obsolete before they could even set out - or, will progress in education come fast enough to prepare them for - maybe not for jobs per se, but for life's work.

The Need for a Reset

The sentiment challenges me. The work that we do now, the steps we take, the decisions we make, the values we uphold, challenge, or accept, and the systems we scaffold on - are what will build the principles on which the future will be built. The trade war between US and China has unintended consequences when it comes to developing digital technologies. Apart from the sanctions of commodities and currency, the dependence on the most importance ingredient on building new technologies - AI chips which uses new generation of microprocessors are being denied to China has also accelerated their own independence to innovate and explore their own inventions. It's been predicted that China, when forced to produce their own versions of operating systems successfully, can also develop their own chips that are potentially equal, if not faster, and quicker than the ones not accessible to them currently.

2. The main alliance with demonetization and digital currency is to do with the need to transact in a more secure environment, eliminating counterfeiting and battle money laundering. It sure works wonders for countries with poor note design, low currency exchange rate and high inflation. However, transforming a legal tender note into an electronic money, whilst adopting digital currency such as Bitcoin and Ethereum also brings forward its own challenges - how to make them legal tender and how to stabilise their value (not perceived/speculative). Its certain that digitalization of money attempts to make the world a more transparent trading environment, lower banking costs and quicker transactions but the drawback is the economic prowess of different regions. Bigger nations have lesser incentives to adopt the switch as their currency is still more valuable.

3. Creativity in the entertainment industry can only be described as the various depiction of moods, behavior, language, emotions and movements of actors in the most natural displays. The AI actor, while able to absorb large amounts of actions in movie scripts, is a novel attempt to simplify shooting scenes. Until the breakthrough of machine deep learning by the "robotic" actors to exhibit/show emotions, movie production will not seen as exciting knowing almost perfect lines to speak but audiences are unable to catch visual actions corresponding to speech. I am absolutely invested in the idea of shareholder capitalism. Yet, I always question if that can really happen. I feel that inherent inequity in society means that there will always be shareholders who will be more equal than others. I wonder if we will be in the same place with different chains on. China as the Future

I find it terrifying, but also exciting. The Chinese do not ring fence their innovations from each other. Its like an open space where one person's innovation can be copied and improved and then worked on again by the originator. It may be strange to those who are immensely invested in the traditional notion of intellectual property. We have to be careful as well not to apply our own ideas on values on what they do. They may build something we need soon, but unfortunately, this has become political.

Amara's Law

This is one concept I use again and again to remind myself to look more carefully at new innovations. I remember how we had a huge 3D movement in films and content just over a decade ago... and it fizzled. Same with NFTs and Cryptos at the moment. Yet, they will build up to something. We just need to predict better what trends would actually become mundane.... that is when it will become widespread.

2. The Future of Strategic Decision-Making
This is an exciting one. With many of our 'future' predictions, to make strategic, long term decisions is probably ranked lowest in possibility for AI to takeover.

Looking at what Roger is suggesting, CEOs could potentially be an algorithm and I imagine it rightly so seeing the increase of Decentralised Autonomous Organisations. I am partially worried that I may run out of a job now!

3. The future is "free"
Listening into Roger's POV on a free future is positive for me. My takeaway is that although the future is uncertain, exponentially growing and sometimes scary...possibilities of universal basic income, being able to do anything, anywhere at anytime, opens up countless of possibilities.

It seems as though the world is at a phase of tinkering: breaking things apart and re-amalganizing them back together just to get a sense of what could be. It is an exciting time, and I get this feeling that humanity is at a cusp of some kind of revolutionary evolution; one that could possibly either make or break us - but into what, it really does seem unimaginable.

The idea excites me. On the other hand, I cannot help but feel a little concerned about whether I can remain relevant. It almost seems as though to survive (not simply to flourish), one has to be everything all in one which does currently seem to be an impossibility in my mind.

Much of what people seem to be saying about "future scenarios" seem to reflect the need for agility or adaptability. It reminds me of a haiku I read at an early age that has stuck with me for eons: it was one about how the sturdy tree is uprooted by the cyclone, contrasted with the weed that flourishes even after the storm.

On one hand, the fragility cum resilience of being like a weed does appeal to me - being something without roots and free to explore whatever the hell is out there. On the other hand, there's a part of me that desires rootedness in something - the need for an anchor that keeps me stable. How to find the balance without losing who I am?

Reset and change: When any new tech emerge, there will be big changes. There will be money to be made, opportunities will present itself for a few and likely benefit many but some of us will be left behind. How will the government help those who tends to fall behind. It be be the elderly’s day to day life to the older worker undergoing change of legacy systems. And will the government step up and take the lead in this change?
Ethic and doing what’s right: who is to decide what is right and what is wrong. It’s easy to define 1 rule for 1 technology but what happens when you mix them up? How can big brother be fast enough to shield the vulnerable group? Since everyone’s definition of ethic is different, how do we keep it in check for the smaller scale situation where big brother can’t intervene? Automate it or keep the job alive? How are we able to shift job scope to those whose jobs are being replaced. Protecting all the data given to your organisation is a given right? Then why are we hearing leaks and hacks all the time? This is one big problem that needs to be addressed.
With all the problems and flaws I see, I am actually hyped for the future, with car and chip makers joining hands, how will my future car look like? How will new technology help my parent who has dementia? Will AI become sentient during my lifetime?
Bottom line: Will tech make us all lazy? I bet some of us, even I am guilty of this. But change is inevitable and we have to make the best of the change and move forward as a society

I thought that it was about time that we walk the non-linear line. I am so ready to consider plausible, non-linear scenarios and "chasm jumping" of forecasting and projection. The old, tried and tested, and so failed, walking a straight line should be abandoned really. Yet, it can be scary-exciting at the same time. Scholars posit that within a complex, non-linear environment, we must fundamentally shift our focus. How apt is this reminder?

(ii) Abandoning rigid structures: This comforts me. I've never felt at ease with rigidity. Perhaps, never quite able to conform - I am a quiet non-conformist. Liminality vs Structure
It's still a scary concept that "everything blurs ... what has been is no more, and what will be is not yet." Is it possible to put a structure or a framework to such ambiguities ... like (hopefully) what we are trying to accomplish in this course? I'm excited and nervous to have to learn to embrace these transitions that are happening in our lifetime--the need to unlearn what we have learnt becomes crucial in order for us to adapt and thrive.

AAA training for our future leaders?
Humans need to be Anticipatory+Antifragile+have Adaptive Agility ... so that we can augment our decision making with machines and not be substituted. Looking at the current education system, I wonder how it will evolve to prepare our children for this future scenario. Eg. Failure is not always wrong but rather a possible platform for new ideas to come forth.

Last thoughts: I think as we really look into the future, it'd throw up more questions than we can answer. Roger Spitz coins DEIP (DeLocalized, Experiential, Immersive & Personalized) in his video as what he characterized as the persistent elements in the future regardless of what forms or functions it takes and that emotionally impacted me on a 'deip' level (had to pun it!).

(1) DeLocalization
Apps like Strava helped make the trip possible as it made my teenage son research, compare and even go into the minds of like-minded people who clock in routes from Malacca to Mecca, even-all for free! It made him feel he belonged to a bigger community of endurance and enthusiasts, adventurers. Already he's made plans for Europe & its not those holiday sorts. Strava just bought a 3d mapping startup to improve the experience and can run on smartwatches independently of mobile devices - so it will soon be agnostic on wearables and eat other softwares.

(2) Experiential & Immersive
Travel through time is just a matter-of-time & science. It is not there yet but as a family I never felt it closer as technology has made planning for extended/separate learning and missionary (not the violent sorts) aspirations in distant places possible. Its a total reset of conventions.

(3) Personalized (and transparent)
The tech company i'm in (partly China funded) radically downsized by 70% (reversed fusion into 2 companies) and roles/teams/mindset are reframed to how each person's best ability to serve future clients is now the new normal. Gone is my immersive tech team of 11, its BD focus for me, but they can be activated at a moment's notice regardless of which company they work for. Politics are off the table while disruptions are on it.
