Her experience was harsh, but she paved the way for other African Americans to also attend school and pursue their educational rights. When she got older, she became an author, a motivational speaker, and created the Ruby Bridges Foundation to create change through education.

He was the first African American president and this marked a huge change in the way people of color were viewed. How their skin tone isn't a limit for them to do the things they wish to achieve. He was an example of how determination and believing in yourself despite the circumstances and others opinions can take you as far as you believe you can go.

The reason for my choice was because he organized and led black marches for blacks' rights and other basic civil rights. His strong belief in nonviolent protest helped set the tone of the movement. Boycotts, protests and marches were eventually effective, and much legislation was passes against racial discrimination.

I chose Harriet Tubman because without her determination and fearlessness, many Black people would be enslaved, abused, and wouldn't take the opportunity to escape.

It became the starting point of the Civil Rights Movement in 1964. Rosa Parks became a nationally recognized symbol of dignity and strength in the struggle to end entrenched racial segregation. This photograph shows the act of empowerment. While Rosa sat in front of the bus, with a white man sitting behind her, shows she had achieved what she had fought for.

In the popular case Brown v Board which ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race was unconstitutional. Looking at this from a conflict perspective the relationship between the school board and the colored students where the school board wants to segregate schools but the schools just for Black students do not have the same facilities and resources that White only schools do. Another concept is social equality where conditions in which no differences in wealth, prestige, or status are based on unnatural conditions exist. In this case there is no social equality since there is segregation and the Black students aren’t getting the same resources as the White students. Lastly from the functionalist perspective, the society (conveniently created by White people) is upheld by segregation. By keeping White people and Black people separated from basic everyday things upholds the fear and prejudice of Black people. With Brown v Board it uproots the system ever so slightly since it gives an ounce, a smidge of something equal for newer Black students.  (Kathryn Liang)

Using conflict approach, the power group here was the superior white group (especially in the Southern America which maintained the slavery system for political and economic purpose) to impose their twisted thinking as a reason to continue the Civil War. Therefore, most of the black people were still suffering from those harsh treatments and regulations. Along with President Lincoln, Douglass became an important advisor to the president with his belief and values and then struggled for his influenced group not to be exploited by resisting for the unfair discrimination.

He fought for the rights of African Americans, encouraging economic autonomy. To this day he is remembered as a man who tried to create equality in America. He also helped many African Americans reconnect with their heritage and raising their self esteem. He was opposed by white people for trying to empower African Americans. This was not uncommon for people who sought justice. Others who fought for equality such as Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated for fighting for equal rights for African Americans as well.

She was one of the prominent figures involved with the Stonewall raids putting herself on the line because she didn’t feel like she had anything to lose at that point. Her selflessness is still felt today as she never was afraid of the retaliation she would face. She was fighting for a future where everyone was equal and that was all that mattered to her.
