It hurts but damn it feels good" (Thomas 341). What was unexpected about this action was how quick Starr was to punch Hailey. Starr didn't even think about how this may affect her image at Williamson, nor does it seem that she cares if she's viewed as a "thug". Some inferences I can make about why she did this would be her pent up anger. leading up to this point, Starr has had anger building up with Hailey. Especially since Hailey seemed to not care about how Starr may be feeling. Crazy" (Thomas 346). The realization that came to Starr's mind was that her dad still had authority over gangs. So much so that he was able to get two gangs who normally would never been seen together, were together. An inference that I can make is that Starr will look up to here dad more. Dogs bark sometimes,but wall-rattling music and gunshots? Not happening" (Thomas 310). Something I wondered about was, is that really how her life was? Did she have to grow up with those sounds? This question is important to the story because it shows how her life is changing. It also shows how some people can go from vastly different lifestyles. She got to live through both while some only live through one. Some do make it, but they're messed up by the time they get there. Not you though. You're going places, no doubt. I always knew that'" (Thomas 369). Some insight Maverick gave was how lucky Seven is to even be graduating, let alone him being alive at all. He also told Seven that he always knew he would make it this far. There are inferences I can make about how this will affect Seven. One of them is that Seven will realize that he is loved unconditionally by his family, especially his dad. Another inference is how it should help Seven decide on college. This quote goes in-depth about how it affects her, "'Nobody understands! I saw the bullets rip through him. I sat there in the street as he took his last breath. I've listened to people try to make it seem like it's okay he was murdered. As if he deserved to die, and I didn't do anything to deserve seeing that sh-t!'" (Thomas 343). The author keeps repeating Starr's trauma to show the real effects of it. Trauma doesn't just up and disappear one day. This is also to show the reader how Khalil's murder is eating away at her. This repetition signifies how she'll eventually come to terms with her trauma. That is a major way people can cope. The memory that came to her mind was when they were little. It was at her birthday party where Hailey and Maya were there as well. It reminded Starr that she knew who Khalil really was. This memory is important to Starr because it has an impact on her. She was friends with him for so long and he died.
