Before reading fever 1793, I was unfamiliar with the epidemic nor did I know the impact it had on the people in Philadelphia. I am eager to start reading to learn more about what life was like for individuals during that time.

So far I am really enjoying the book. I so many questions about "Fever" and the impact it had on marginalized groups as well non people of color

Leaving the city

I can't believe Mattie and Grandpa are leaving the city. I don't understand how running away from the city will prevent anyone from getting sick. Especially since its an epidemic.

I am relieved that Mattie was able to recover so quickly. However, I do not think it is a good idea that her and grandpa return back to the city. Considering that the fever seems to have only gotten worse and still no word on Lucille.

Grandpa cook passing really struck a nerve with me. I cannot believe those scavengers. I wonder if Mattie hadn't screamed would he had even come downstairs? Now Mattie is alone :(

Now that Mattie is alone I have so many questions. Who will take care of her if she becomes ill again? In society she is viewed as a young woman. But I don't know how she could possibly make it on her own.

I am so happy that Mattie found Eliza. Not only is she my favorite character I love their relationship. Although states were claimed to be "free" at this point there was still laws put in place against black people. However, I believe the Cook's took care of Eliza and treated her like family.

Will Mattie close up shop?

Now that Mattie has found Eliza after losing grandpa and still no word from mother. I wonder "what will happen to the coffeehouse?"

Meeting Nell

I am not sure if the book is foreshadowing but Nell story seems very similar to Mattie's. I could not imagine losing my mother at such a young age. Especially during an epidemic where most of the town has disappeared.

Where is her father?

What happened to the children who were not found during the fever?

Will she too come down with fever?

Eliza and Joseph have decided to take in Mattie and Nell!!! However, I wonder will they have enough food for two extra mouths? Also, How long will they be able to stay?

Sidenote: Black people were risking their lives to help those who became ill with yellow fever because they believed it would help change the narrative.

So much has happened and nobody still has heard from Lucielle. I am starting to wonder did she really survive the fever? Are they hiding the truth from Mattie?

Returning back to the city

I cannot believe those poor babies have the "fever." I am hopeful that Eliza and Mattie can nurse them back to health. I mean since Mattie already had the fever can she get it again?

Are they strong enough to survive?

Do they have to be bled?

How long until they are back up running on their feet?

"Fever" in the children

Days had past and it seems as though the kids are getting worse. Eliza and Mattie seemed exhausted.. If they were to become ill there is no chance for those babies.

Mattie brought up a good point. There is no way those babies will survive being bled. ESPECIALLY with their current state.

I wonder if the doctor who started the "bleeding" process was actually skilled and trained.

I never thought I would be so happy to hear about summer ending. A sign of frost meant that the "fever" epidemic will soon come to an end. The babies have a chance at survival and Mattie can hopefully find her mother.

Although this is good news I still wonder

Where is Lucille?

Are people going to return back to the city?

How will life look after this?

I was rooting for Nathaniel and Mattie this entire book. I am so happy to hear that he survived and made it through the epidemic. When he tossed that flower out of the window I did not know whether he too had become ill.

Now that the fever has been broken what does this mean for him and Mattie?

Mattie and Eliza running the coffeehouse just like old times. I believe that their partnership will bring customers back and also give them both a sense of stability. Before the epidemic broke out people seemed to have enjoyed Eliza's cooking and Mattie's hospitality.

Lucielle is home!!!!

OMGGG!! Lucielle is alive and she did survive the "fever." I was beginning to lose hope especially with no mail coming through or word from the farm. Reading her and Mattie reuniting brung tears to my eyes. I could not imagine being away from my mom for that long.

The coffeehouse seems to be back to normal, well as normal as it will get without Grandpa cook. Mattie seems to have really embodied her new role as a "Young Woman", now caring for a child. Eliza is able to provide for her family and Lucielle seems to be alright.

I really am enjoying learning about the historical contexts of this epidemic and its impact on the city of Philadelphia. A place I now call home.
