To me English is a stepping stone to many other cultures because it has been transformed in so many ways because of how widespread it has become. I think about the ways English made it into other cultures in rather forceful ways and what that means for me as a native English speaker. I think English to me carries a responsibility to engage thoughtfully with other forms of English and do my part to step outside of it as well.

Growing up with one side of my family who speaks English fluently and one side who does not and instead speaks a multitude of other languages, English both constrains and helps me. Because English is the only language I speak fluently, it is the pathway through which I communicate everything. This can be constraining when it comes to speaking with my family as they may not understand much of what I am saying and I may not have the words in other languages to communicate effectively.

English is my method of cognition and perception and processing. It's something I love and treasure. It's something that I value because I know it is valuable, both to myself and to many other people in my life and the world. It's something I treat very preciously. It also exists oppressively, with a long arm of cruelty that still reverberates to this day. I am very lucky to speak it fluently, and that sense of good fortune is a direct result of English as a form of oppression.

I like that it's expansive and people can take anything away from it; interpretation is vast. In a biracial household, language becomes something that differentiates relationships between people. I also love reading and exploring the new worlds that come with that, so it acts as a door to these new experiences.

I view English as a means of communicating and interacting with other people as part of a community. I see English as one form of communication, but not as a dominant form that is more integral than other forms. For example, I also speak Spanish (though not fluently) and I wouldn't say I value English over my limited knowledge of Spanish, even though I use it more on a day to day basis. English, similar to other languages, is a way to describe a cultural identity that connects people by having a shared value/ability, which in my case would include both English and Spanish.

I've had a tumultuous relationship with language and English in particular. I love chatting with people and seeing how a conversation can develop, its an art and a form of communication, and a connection with a community. The realm of the written word took me many years to appreciate. I now see English texts as a library from which people can gain insight.
