I feel like Mrs. Mallard does not feel pleased in her current situation, she feels trapped. Knowing that her husband has passed has almost given her a sense of freedom. However, as we can see through the use of irony in the story when he returns unharmed she is more upset about his life than she was by his death.

I think Mrs. Mallard is very perceptive of the things that symbolize freedom (birds, looking out a window into the world beyond, no longer having the tie of marriage), and I do NOT think she is true to herself. She is not happy in her marriage, yet weeps when she hears the news of her husbands death. She then dies of shock (dare I say: heartache?) because he's actually alive... dun dun DUUUN.

Mrs. Mallard relates to the world around her by looking out her window. She feels confined in her role as a wife and she longs for freedom. She is never gets the opportunity to be herself because her husbands returns. His presence scares her to death.
