Acquisition of hikmah (positive values) from 'ibadah

Acquisition of hikmah (positive values) from ʿibādah starts with having the right niyyah (intention). When we do something purely for Allah, it brings meaning and sincerity to our worship. For example, praying isn’t just about completing a ritual. It’s about deepening our connection with Him. Next, we need to apply the right ʿamal (practices). It’s not just about performing acts of worship but doing them correctly and consistently. Following the teachings of the Prophet and making an effort to improve, like focusing more in our prayers or adding extra sunnah acts, helps us grow spiritually. Finally, true worship isn’t just about rituals it shapes our character through iḥsān (positive virtues). The more we connect with Allah, the more we become honest, patient, and kind in our daily lives. A person who prays with sincerity is more likely to be compassionate, forgiving, and helpful to others.

Ṣalāh, as mentioned in Sūrah al-ʿAnkabūt (29:45), prevents immorality and wrongdoing. It strengthens self-discipline, purifies the heart, and keeps a person connected to Allah. Ṣawm in Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:183) teaches taqwā, self-restraint, and gratitude. By experiencing hunger, believers develop patience and empathy for the less fortunate. Zakāh, in Sūrah al-Tawbah (9:103), purifies both wealth and the heart. It removes greed, promotes social justice, and ensures that wealth benefits the community. Ḥajj, as highlighted in Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:197), is a journey of humility and devotion. It reminds believers of their ultimate return to Allah and the importance of righteousness.

Preparation for Ṣalāh, with Khushūʿ

Before performing Ṣalāh, it’s essential to ensure you are in a state of purity by doing wuḍū’ (ablution) or tayammum (dry ablution) if water isn’t available. Cleanliness is a key requirement for your prayer to be accepted. For your prayer to be valid, certain conditions must be met. You need to be a Muslim, of sound mind, mature, free from ritual impurity, and your clothes and body must be clean. You also need to cover your ʿawrah (private parts), pray within the designated time, face the Qiblah, and have the correct intention (niyyah). The key actions in Ṣalāh include Takbīr al-Iḥrām (saying “Allāhu Akbar”), qiyām (standing), rukūʿ (bowing), sujūd (prostration), tashahhud (testifying), and tasleem (salutation). Performing these pillars correctly is necessary for the prayer to be valid. In certain situations, such as when traveling, you can shorten (qaṣr) and combine (jamʿ) prayers for convenience. You may also perform voluntary (nawāfil) prayers to earn extra rewards, and if you’re ill, you can pray sitting or lying down according to your ability. These provisions highlight the flexibility and mercy of Islamic practice.

The Virtues Found in Ṣalāh with Khushūʿ

Praying with khushūʿ helps build true submission (al-Ṭāʿah) to Allah, showing our loyalty and devotion to Him. It also teaches struggle (al-Jihād) because staying focused in prayer requires effort and discipline. At the same time, ṣalāh encourages self-reflection (muḥāsabah), allowing us to evaluate our actions and seek self-improvement. It also strengthens modesty and self-restraint (ʿiffah) by keeping us away from sinful thoughts and behaviors. Most importantly, ṣalāh develops humility (tawaḍḍuʿ), reminding us that no matter how successful we are, we are always in need of Allah’s guidance and mercy.

The virtues found in Ṣawm (fasting) include ṣabr (patience and forbearance), as fasting teaches you to endure hardships and control your desires. It also cultivates takrīm (respect and deference), as you learn to respect the rules of fasting and the needs of others during this time. Additionally, raḥmah (friendliness) is enhanced, as fasting encourages kindness, empathy, and a sense of solidarity with those who are less fortunate. These virtues help strengthen your character and bring you closer to Allah.

The Virtues Found in Zakāh and Ṣadaqah

Zakāh and Ṣadaqah are powerful acts of worship that go beyond just giving money. They help purify both your wealth and your heart. Tazkiyyah (Purification): By giving Zakāh and Ṣadaqah, you’re not only cleaning your wealth but also your soul. It removes any attachment to material things and teaches you to appreciate what you have, fostering spiritual growth and inner peace. Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah): When you give charity, you’re showing your trust in Allah’s provision. It’s a reminder that your sustenance comes from Him, and giving away a part of what you have helps you depend less on material wealth and more on Allah. Ukhuwwah (Brotherhood): Charity brings people together. Whether it’s Zakāh or voluntary Ṣadaqah, helping those in need strengthens the bonds of brotherhood in the Muslim community. It builds empathy and mutual support, making everyone feel more connected. In Surah Al-Zalzalah (99:7-8), Allah says: “So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it; and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.” This verse teaches us that every action, no matter how small, matters. While these verses focus on personal accountability, they also reflect the broader idea of supporting one another in the community. Acts like Ṣadaqah are ways of purifying yourself and helping your community, reinforcing the spirit of brotherhood.

Performing Ḥajj and ʿUmrah offers profound spiritual benefits, notably the cultivation of Al-Taḍḥiyyah (sacrifice) and Taqwā (God-consciousness). Al-Taḍḥiyyah (Sacrifice): Engaging in Ḥajj and ʿUmrah involves significant personal sacrifice, such as dedicating time, resources, and enduring physical challenges. This act of giving up personal comforts for the sake of Allah exemplifies true devotion and submission. Taqwā (God-Consciousness): The rituals of Ḥajj and ʿUmrah are designed to enhance mindfulness of Allah. By adhering to the prescribed acts and maintaining a state of purity, pilgrims strengthen their Taqwā, fostering a deeper connection with the Creator.
