Vladek: Arties dad. A soldier that participated in the war. 
Lucia: This was Vladek girlfriend that wanted to keep him by himself forever. However, it didn't work out for them.
Anja: Vladek's wife and Arties mom. Informs us she helped out the communist and keep secrets.
Anja's parents: They were wealthy but made sure to treat Vladek with honor when they first met him. Her dad helped take care of Vladek's factory while he took care of Anja.

  • Look at the title page for the chapter on page 8/9. What do you think the words and images foreshadow?
    • I believe that the words and images foreshadow a troubled relationship, where the woman wants the man to stay and begs him but the man is not wanting to hear anything that she has to say. 

    1. List five (5) events from chapter 1. Explain their significance.
    1.       Artie goes to visit his “poppa”, which is where he begins to draw that book about him. How this all comes to be, from that visit that informs us about him. 
    2.       Poppa begins to inform Artie of his past life, and fill him up with details his life in Poland and the war. Good feedback of his life and the past. 
    3.       Explains his relationship of Lucia, which I believe is significant because it didn’t work out and seems like Lucia is one of those type of women that likes it her way, no matter what. 
    4.       He meets a new girl named Anja, which he tells Lucia that she is going to get engaged with her so Lucia leave them alone. 
    5.       Lucia causes trouble to their relationship but then he fixes it. I believe that Lucia will be a huge headache for them and it will be hard to get rid of her. 

    1. Page 21/ 23: What is the irony of the conversation between Artie and his father?
    The conversation takes a twist because his father informs him that what he is going to tell him has nothing to do with Hitler and the Holocaust. He says it is private and makes Artie promises that he will respect it and not write it down.

  • Look at the title page for the chapter on page 22/25. What do you think the words and images foreshadow?
    • The picture on the title page has a symbol of a swastika, with it being titled “The Honeymoon”, underneath it has a couple mice looking up to it. I believe it is them following the swastika symbol and using it as a guide, when they shouldn’t because it’s not good. 

    1. List five (5) events from chapter 2. Explain their significance.
    1.       Artie goes back to visit his father more often to listen to his story. A big role in the book of him informing Artie and the reader of what happened. 
    2.       Arties father has to consume a lot of pills in order to survive. His dad is the one who informs him about the past, therefore he needs him in order to know more. 
    3.       Arties father informs Artie about his moms past boyfriend who was a communist, and informs that he stood away from communist. A key detail to know about his poppa. 
    4.       Informs that Anja was informed in conspirations. Good for the reader to know that she kept secret things and other conspiracy information.  
    5.       Poppa informs Artie that he had sibling that wasn’t able to make it out the war, and the Artie was really premature. Artie had problems with coming out the wound and he was often called “Heil Hitler” because he had a broken arm that always jumped up. Artie was compared to Hitler, a lethal leader for the Germans, not a good thing. 

    1. What animals are used to portray the Germans and Polish people? Describe some characteristics we associate with these animals. Do you agree with the way Spiegelman uses the various animals?
    The animals that are used to portray them are pigs (only animal I can identify), but I believe that cats are used also. I believe that the cats would be the Nazis and the mice are the Jews because the cats eat the mice. I do agree with the way he uses these animals because it is a good way to tell the story and use the animals to make the story easier. 

    1. Give a paragraph description of Vladek (Artie’s father). Use details (with citations) from chapters 1&2 to support your assertions. Does anything happen in chapter 2 that changes our perceptions of him?
    Vladek is a caring person that put his wife before himself. Such as in chapter one, he takes a trip to visit Anja and fix things with her because Lucia wrote her a letter that almost broke their relationship. Also, Vladek was there for Anja when she was in trouble and being looked for by police. Vladek has full trust with Anja and her parents because he allows her father to take care of his factory whenever she feels bad/sick. In chapter two, I do question myself on how much he trusts them because Anja felt good out of the nowhere, and then Anja dads never informed him that his factory was robbed until after Anja feels better. I feel like it was staged but I could be wrong.

What do you think the words and images foreshadow?

    The chapter 3 title has a picture of two soldiers (cats) with a mean look towards a mouse. I think these images are the start of the Nazis coming after the Jews. 

    2.       List five (5) events from chapter 3.  Explain their significance.     

    1.       Vladek informs Artie of his draft in 1939. Tells him that they were given training for a few days and then their takeoff to the frontier. I think this is an important event that leads to the war. 
    2.       Vladek tells Artie that his father tried his best to avoid his sons going into the Russian army because he had to was stuck there for 25 years, to Serbia. Significant detail that explains their position on the army. 
    3.       Vladek’s father made him and his siblings have a diet in order to avoid getting called into the army. It was something that he hated but it had to be done because that’s the way his father wanted it to be. 
    4.  Vladek preferred to take part in the army rather than to keep following his fathers rules because he didn't like the dieting and conditions. He was drafted into the war in 1939. Important to know how he ended up in the war and why. 
    5. While in war, Vladek killed a Nazi but then the Nazis were able to outnumber them and keep them captive. This is a significant point in the book that explains that the Nazis were stronger and had more dominance.        

    3.       How does Spiegelman visually depict the Germans’ attitude about killing the Jews?
    It was ordinary, nothing out of the common. For example, while a soldier was chilling and drinking, the comrades were the Jewish.

    4.       What does the incident with Artie’s coat tell us about both Artie and his father?
    Arties father threw out Arties coat because it was an old shabby coat. It shows that even though Artie is 30 years old, he still can't decide over his own things. His father wants him dressing the best possible.

However, i do not like how he cuts the story in spurts to inform the reader about the present actions of Artie and his father. For example, in the story, He shifts from the main story, to the part of Artie and his father talking and interacting. Secondly, his choice of words is at a normal level. I wouldn't say that his choice of diction would be at a high level because most of these words can be read by an elementary student or jr high student. Thirdly, his reference to real life events are correct because this a book about the past and informing the readers of something that actually happened. However, this is a metaphoric story because it has mice playing the role of the Jews, cats playing the role of the Nazis, and pigs playing the role of the people from Poland.
