The board of the Gold Coast Titans have highlighted that the primary focus of 2024 is to enhance community connection. This aligns to the 2030 roadmap pillars of the club as evident in the 'Building Titans' report (Titans.com.au, 2021). It is evident that participation in rugby league will continue to grow as the game saw a 9% increase in participants across all programs and formats in 2023 according to the 2023 NRL Annual Report (National Rugby League Ltd., 2024).

The report also states, men's club registrations has grown 5% and women's registrations have also increased by an impressive 12%. This contributes to the idea that rugby league is of growing interest and the pillars of the Titans 2030 roadmap are able to be fulfilled with the correct strategies being implemented.

The Impact - Effectiveness of strategies

The QRL has shown that through implementing effective strategies, community connection is achievable. Through strategies such as increasing community involvement, expanding pathway opportunities and 'bridging the gap' to equal pay for mens and women's State of Origin players, there has been the most interest from both men and women to play rugby league than ever before. The report entails that "64 566 players participated within Queensland competitions in 2022... the highest in a decade" (www.qrl.com.au, 2023). By adopting similar strategies such as pay increases for women and expanding pathways into the Titans and their community, community connection would be able to thrive more than ever.

The Gold Coast Titans have been apart of the National Rugby League since 2007 and recorded a membership base of 13,124 for the 2023 season according to LeagueUnlimitedMedia (Media |, 2024). This figure is significantly lower compared to the other clubs who typically have around 20 000 members. It could be argued that other clubs, such as the South Sydney Rabbitohs, have an advantage of generational loyalty from their members over many more years. However, regional rivals the Redcliffe Dolphins joined the NRL just last year and have already received over 30,000 memberships in their debut season.

The caption "For our Legion" is a recurring slogan accompanied with the hashtag #FeelTheEnergy that can be spotted across numerous of the Gold Coast Titans' social media platforms (gctitans, 2024).

The men's NRL captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui vows "this year we have no excuses... we're just gonna turn up for all you guys out there." Media impressions and verbal commitment from idolised players like him excites all fans of all ages and backgrounds. Additionally, the video gives an insight to show the diversity of the Titans' stakeholders. A elderly fan boasts many Titans jerseys while quoting "it's all about passion, it's all about rivalry and that's why I love the Gold Coast Titans." There is also footage of a fan who claims to light incense and pray before every Titans game, which promotes the message that people of all faith, culture and diversity are accepted and can participate within this game.

Promotions such as the slogan in the Instagram reel above, ignites excitement and hope within viewers and fans. This can have a run on effect into participation in the game among viewers, especially young people, wanting to follow in the footsteps of their favourite sporting stars. The promotion of the hashtag by players would also give the club an identity that fans can resonate with and be apart of. By promoting the use of it in their content, fans would be encouraged to do the same thus providing greater exposure on social media and search engines which can be accessed worldwide, thus reaching a greater demographic of potential stakeholders.

The Impact - Strategies through local community suppport

Trailblazers in within the Gold Coast sporting community can be identified as the Gold Coast Suns of AFL. Their mission was outlined on their website page to bring "bold, fresh, community-focused football to the people of the Gold Coast" (goldcoastfc.com.au, 2024). Through their commitment of over 45 000 community service hours since their establishment in 2009, the club has achieved an astounding 82% overall increase in participation within grassroots and women's programs.

The Titans' could look to implement similar strategies by choosing local projects to invest time and money into such as women's domestic violence shelters and disability clinics. This type of community outreach allows for testimonials to be shared, relationships to be built and pathways to be discovered. This could lead to unique stakeholders becoming interested in the game, as family and friends would want to show support or be inspired to participate in the game because of impact the club has made on them.

The challenge - grassroots and opportunities through affiliation

Clearinghouse of Sport (Commission, 2023), has recorded that less than half of children aged 14 and under participated in organised sport in Australia in 2023. The table above depicts that aside from Australian Football, all the sports that are participated in for children and youth are predominately non-contact sports. This can presume a negative impression of the game of rugby league to parents and children due to the risks that come with tackling and contact sport.

In 2013, the TFA (Touch Football Australia) and the NRL formed a partnership to "work together to create the largest sporting community in the country... and ensure there is a place on the field for everyone" (nrl.com, 2013). The Titans should look to take advantage of partnerships like these, as the talent scouted in touch football and brought over to rugby league has produced many NRL/W stars such as Kalyn Ponga and Tarryn Aiken. It is important that the affiliation with similar sports such as Touch Football is promoted from an early age to ensure grassroots programs are able develop from touch football and therefore over into rugby league.
