My name is Shay and I am currently studying full time while working part time in the Australian Defence Force. I really love being outside when the weather is warm for a study break, and I feel like over the last few years I have really found who I am and have strong moral and personal ‘roots’. This is shown metaphorically and literally by the tree. I have healed a lot and I am a strong believer that I am the author of my own story (life), which is shown in the picture by me writing in a book. I do not see myself as a creative or artistic person, but I know there is art in everything and I always try my best. I hope you learnt a little about me and I look forward to learning about you as I read the submissions.

Week 2 - Collecting recycled material for Stopmotion

Initially when asked to use rubbish to create art I could not see past the oily crumpet packet or the crumby chip packet. I played around with the items and manipulated them on the ground of my lounge room wondering how these simple household items could be used to generate art. I was inspired by the ocean and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander use of animals in their art. I used scissors and glue to cut the cardboard into fish and sea snakes. I twisted the openings of the malleable packets and squashed them into the openings of the two bottles, this created the look of coral. I could make this more coral-like in the video by moving it slightly between frames so it looked like it was moving in the current.
I learnt that by drawing inspiration from other art, I can create my own masterpiece. I learnt that you should not necessarily go with your first idea, as my first idea was to incorporate myself into the video and have the rubbish follow me around the house was too complicated and did not meet the brief we were given. Now I have an appreciation for using recycled items for art, I will think of innovative ways to do this more often in my classroom.

When I read this task I immediately pictured what I was going to draw in my mind. I looked around me to source items I could use to draw the straight lines (30cm ruler) and circles (bottom of a perfume bottle). I knew I was going for a somewhat symmetrical vibe to my artwork but in hindsight I got wrapped up in the fun of creating it that I did not really achieve that, and that's ok! On reflection, it is clear that my subconscious drew me towards the pink theme as I recently found out I am having a little girl in February, this clearly came out in my colour choices without me even realising. Funny how your thoughts can sometimes come out in artwork when you didn't necessarily intend them to. I wonder if this happens to other people (students) as well?
While this task is simple, it is a great way to integrate art into other subjects.
Maths - geometry and measurement
English - speaking in front of people and giving directions
Geography - map reading
PE - simple navigation

Week 8 - Soundscape

"Circles in a Circle" (1923)
I am lost, and then I am found.

In this week 8 task we were asked to pick an artwork and write a 1 sentence poetic response about how it made us feel. Circles within a Circle appealed to me as it reminded me of a maze I was in as little kid. The maze had curved sides and jagged corners which made it particularly hard to navigate. This is where my sentence came from, I am lost, and then I am found.
We were then asked to use a program to create a soundscape that creates an atmosphere to enhance the artwork. For me, this sound needed to be upbeat and fun. I added my voice making a loopy sound which I thought resembled a child going down a slide. I included tapping of my fingernails on the computer as this sounded like fast running feet. These 3 elements came together well to achieve the fast faced, changing of direction track I wanted to go with this image.
I can see the benefits to using this application in my classroom as a teacher. I can see integration opportunities with English, HASS and within the Arts.

This activity challenged me in a surprising way. When I read the task I immediately decided to do a frog, they hop, right?
But what else do frogs do that make them unique? I had to do some frog research which helped me to included other movements such as long leg stretches, tongue movements to get food and blowing my cheeks up to represent their noises.

When I was engaging in this activity it made me realise that we cannot assume students prior knowledge about amphibians. Watching a information video on the animal beforehand and brainstorming their characteristics will be necessary in the classroom. I have an interest in working with students with special needs and this was something that challenged me when thinking about to make this activity inclusive. If I was to do this activity in the classroom I would use same ability grouping so that students could select an animal that they could perform the movements for.

Shay Knowles

Week 10 - First Fleet

In this activity we were asked to suggest drama strategies that would be appropriate to assist teaching students about the first fleet. We had to consider which strategy would best fit the scenario and write brief teacher notes explaining what the students would be doing.

I found this activity quite challenging. Not necessarily the matching of the drama strategies and the teacher notes, but I kept thinking of how I could make this lesson appropriate for First Nations students. I wondered what perspective I would approach this lesson from, and whether it would be an inclusive decision to ask for support from the Aboriginal Liaison Officer within the school, as to how to approach this topic. I did not want the inclusion of drama to seem to take away from the seriousness and sensitivity of this topic for First Nations students.

I came to realise that both First Nations and English perspectives should be explored and that I will need to enlist help for this, as I cannot provide authentic First Nations perspectives as I am not First Nations myself. Drama being included will only enhance this learning experience and I look forward to trying this lesson out in my class one day.

During this activity we were asked to listen to Carnival of Animals. We were asked to simply notice what we hear and write it down. We were then asked to listen to the music again and respond through art to express the emotion the music is evoking in us.

What I noticed when listening to the music was building of pace and volume, a lot of grand sounds, overlapping, a build and then a stop, repetition, quick sharp sounds and purposeful contrast in sounds. When I listened again and responded through art, my response is captured above. I found it interesting looking at my response through art, and noticing that it matched in some ways my description with words. A lot of sharp movements and contrast.

This would be a good activity with students to do with a piece of music to get them articulate what they notice sounds doing, and then responding through art. Both these methods are responding to movement and I think students understanding would be increased seeing these two methods compared.
