It is caused by a bacterium that infects both males and females. Gonorrhea mostly affects the urethra, rectum, or throat. In females, it can also infect in the cervix. The pathogen of gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. The symptoms of gonorrhea include painful urination and abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis. Men may experience testicular pain and women may experience pain the lower belly. Often some people may not feel symptoms of gonorrhea. Gonorrhea can have effects on newborns. Untreated gonorrhea infection in pregnancy can cause miscarriages, premature birth, premature rupture of membranes, and chorioamnionitis. Sometimes, it can cause a newborn to even be blind permanently. If you do not get treatment for gonorrhea it can lead to serious complications in the future. If left untreated it can spread through bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections in other parts of the body. The recommended treatment for gonorrhea is a one-time injection of the antibiotic ceftriaxone.
